Hmm. This is the only article I could find on-line. The WSJ has a better one on the front page. Basically, Porsche finished last in quality of cars for 90 days of ownership in 2004.

I had some negative editorial comment here, but I decided to delete them. My opinion of Porsche after the soccer-tank fiasco is well known and I don't feel like getting flamed.

This is not relevant to Porsche 911/boxster buyers/owners, since even the article states that it was the Cayenne SUV that brought them from 2nd place in 2003 to last in 2004 (different plant too - although the Carrera GT is manufactured in the same plant as the SUV

I agree, the results are skewed by the mere fact that Cayennes heavily outnumber sales of other Porsche models combined and the car has had some reliability growing pain issues. Most issues are resolved early in the life of the car, but almost every Cayenne owner has had at least one minor glitch. The most common one was the weeping rear window washer nosel. I had that along with a faulty ABS sensor that failed...It should be noted that the previous year's report had Posche in the top five for reliabilty since the Cayenne was not yet accounted for in those results..

I'd throw those studies out the window due to inaccuracy. Of the times I received the questionare in the mail, I never filled it out or sent it back in. Number one, it was an inconvenience. Number two, since I was a satisfied owner without problems, why bother to complain or fill it out? What I'm getting at is that the majority of questionares they get back are probably from owners who hate their cars because of problems vs satisfied owners.

Here's the 2003 initial vehicle quality chart. Porsche has clearly gone down, though not as dramatically as when comparing the first 2 charts. Clearly the Cayenne has had a big impact. First year teething problems, plus the Cayenne buyer is probably less tolerant to issues (and therefore more critical in the survey) than the typical Porsche sport car buyer.
Decline of the sports cars ...
I know this is a subject has been beaten to death here in the past, but Porsche is no longer a sports car manufacturer. Now and in the future, the primary revenue (and profits) will come from sedans and SUV’s (TANKS). The sports cars business will continue the slow decline towards irrelevance that the latest sales numbers indicate.
Given that, this JD Powers survey is very bad news.
