Still hunting for that 996TT. A quick Q or 2.

I am getting close to buying an 02/03 TT via an independent dealer who buys cars from the Porsche lease return auction and charges a flat fee. I have had great luck with MB's from him using this method. My concern is that I won't get to check out the car before hand. Just the specs on paper and his assessment over the phone. If I can get a late 03 that is still under factory warranty, how would you feel about going this route? I will find out the price range later next week to see what the savings might be versus the cars at some independent dealers in the area.

Admin...can I post a link to a car I am considering for feedback from the forum?

What about the specs and some pics?

Thanks.

By the way, I drive (track) a Cayman right now. It has hooked me on Porsche and Speed Yellow.

Depends on if you want a CPO car? I personally would want the CPO warranty myself.

If you buy the car WITHOUT a PPI, you are a fool!

$750 -$1000

That includes the delivery and detailing of the car.

Both times I bought a Mercedes through him I ended up getting PERFECT cars, still under factory warranty for 10 to 15 percent below wholesale KB trade-in value. My SL500 was $50k. Dealers had the same car on the lot for $75k asking price.

He is saying that very low mile 03 cars with a few months of warranty left are $60 to $65k. He buys the cars from the same place Porsche dealerships buy their "CPO" cars. The difference is the inspection and warranty from Porsche. For the $10k difference in price I can get a warranty.

Being still under factory warranty would make me feel a little better.

That is my concern. What if it is still under warranty?

But after all my reading on the subject, I am not clear on the over-rev subject. How many of what type is a deal killer?

I would think that ONE mechanical over rev high enough to tweak the valves would be bad enough. E36 M3 folks called that the "money shift"...redline in 3rd then shift to 2nd instead of 4th.

If a car is under factory warranty and it has the 2nd gear pop-out issue, will they fix it? Replace the synchros?

I may have the opportunity to get an inspection. If something shows up that is significant, he will keep the car. He would get it fixed and sell it. He keeps a small inventory of cars that he sells. Not confirmed, however.

Any PPI horror stories?

I bought a new Porsche and the dealership tore up the paperwork after it had the same problem 3 times and spent the first 4 days of ownership in the shop. Sort of like a tragic birth story. So who knows? Now I am looking for a car that has proven it can make it home. LOL.

I do the same thing although my guy owns a Mits. dealership. I have bought a bunch of BMW's and Lexus' from him and just got an 02 996tt. He charges me $500, and the most important part....he gives me a couple days to have it checked out. He has always said he can send it back if it there is an issue with the car.

Maybe ask your guy if that is an option i.e. you have a PPI done and it comes back with a problem, see if he can refuse it and send it back

I think he has offered that in the past on my Mercedes. I will have to check.

I have not been so excited about getting a car since I was 16. And that, my friends, was a LONG time ago.

What do you guys think about this car? It is exactly what I want.

PPI = pre purchase inspection, CPO = 2yrs or 100k whichever comes first. i would be reticent to purchase the car without either of the two. the factory warranty is 4/50 so i wouldnt imagine too much time remaining on the factory warranty. just my thoughts. best of luck to you.

My CPO warrantly helps me sleep at night..already paid for the premium I paid for the car...this last dealer visit would have cost me $1800. Steering oil resevoir and a new MAF....

DaveN007, I, too, am looking for '01-'03 996TT and I am in the Bay Area. Do you think your friend can help me out as well? I think CPO vs. third party insurance isn't a big deal for me, as long as I can get the latter on them.

Either way, good luck.
