Engine Warm Up

I drive my 996TT everyday as my daily driver. I almost always let the car run for 2 to 5 minutes so the engine will warm up before driving off, and in the morning sometimes I let it run for 10 minutes. I find that if you don't at least let it run for 1 or 2 minutes, the throttle is very unresponsive and the engine hesitates.

My question is, how long do you guys normally let your car warm up before taking off? Do many of you just get in and go, or do you always let it idle for a while first?

I think I read in the manual it says not to sit there idling upon startup. Crank the car and go. I do stay off of boost utill temp is up to normal. I have heard that water temp will come up before oil is acutally up to temp. May be a good idea to allow a fuz extra for oil to warm up before boosting it hard. Anyone else agree with this?

Mine is a DD as well ... I start it up ... and when the rpm needle dips after a minute or so, then I go ... as with y'all I keep off of boost until optimal operating temp ...

This is correct (RTFM). You need to warm up more than just the oil. Porsche recommends start and GO...I do not get on it until after about 5 minutes

This is good to know. I guess I will stop letting it sit so long after cranking it. Do you guys notice the hesitation after you first start it, though? I have a left turn to make across a busy intersection when I leave my subdivision in the morning and I am likely to get hit in the side if the car hesitates while I am pulling out.

I get in and go but do not get on it until the car has been at temp for few minutes. Cool down once I get into the about a mile from home, I mellow out so I can just turn it off when I get home. If it happens to be a really hot day I will let it sit for a minute before I turn it off

That's exactly what I do. I also never go WOT unless the car has reached normal operating temps.

under 3,500 rpm until close to 180 deg

30 second cool down at idle if last few miles were mellow. 1 min cool down if hard driven before parking

I think Porsche recommends start up and go...but do not exceed 4000 RPM until engine reaches operating temp. Pretty much what others are saying.

I let my warm up for a few seconds and then drive it easy until it fully warms up.

I start and go, then drive like a little old lady until normal operating temp -- after that, then I go WOT as often as I can.

I'm gentle until the oil *pressure* is below 2 at idle.

I see 0.1 bar while it's warming up occasionally. I figure a little boost can't hurt. It's so hard not to sometimes

I crank and go, but short-shift at 3k until the temps are stable...then it's go-time. This is a real tease for me as I am onto the freeway in about 2 minutes depending on work.

On the way home, I start to really baby the car for the last few minutes. I have considered a turbo timer but it's not super-necessary for me.

If you're the type to turn the key and punch it, remember: your Turbo is wishing it could rouse you out of bed at 3am, whip you through a few wind sprints and tear both your hamstrings.
