A dip in RPM at 3-4 sec's after cold start?

I did a search but I must not be using the proper lingo.

I noticed that almost every morning when I start the car, right about the time when the oil pressure gauge hits 3-4 there is a hiccup for a split second and then it runs fine. It seems to do it only on cold starts. Every thing else seems to be normal. No lights etc.

Is this normal? It has done that since I have had the car.
It's an 03 x50 with about 26000 miles completely stock.

my 02 with 44600 does the same thing. Stock. The car also has a rough, sporadic, idle until it is done with warm up. Interested why both happen.

nice post,

My modified 03 X50 does the same thing every morning when I start it up. I never really considered it an issue to be concerned with.

I beleive its the air pumps that turn on. It will calm down in 30 secs. Nothing to worry about.

I figured I would search for this one before making my own thread. I'm having this exact same issue and I'm having a hard time believing that this is "normal." No car I've owned has ever done this, nor have any of my dad's Porsches.

After a cold start (mostly just on the first start of the day), the throttle response at low RPMs is inconsistent. Sometimes it will stumble if I don't get the RPMs just right when starting to roll in 1st gear. I also notice a cut-out if I shift into 2nd gear before reaching ~3k RPMs in 1st gear. It takes a sec before I get any power in 2nd gear. Believe me, I'm not flogging it while cold and this isn't normal "turbo lag," either; it feels like something ignition related.

I'm thinking either plugs, coils, MAF, or maybe something similar to an idle-air-control motor.

Any ideas?

Its the oil pressure advancing the cams, then the cams re sync hence the hick up same at around 3k cruising. Almost a dead miss.

There is no idle air control motor with fly by wire the ecu adjusts the TB accordingly. Can be a host of items but I would check for boost/vacuum leaks then take it from there.

I agree your case doesn't sound normal. Some fluctuations in the rpm as the car is idling from a cold start seems normal. Stumbling and/or cutting out is more serious than that.

Normal. Every 996tt I've done a cold start on has done this. It's just a spit second about 3 seconds after start up and then it's smooth. I think it may have something to do with the Variocams pumping up with oil pressure or something to that effect. There should not be any other issues as others have mentioned here like stumbling at low RPMS, etc....

mine does it also. but only that split second rpm drop everyone describes, then right back to the 1100 or so until it drops to the normal 800rpm idle after initial warmup. it's comforting to hear it's normal, but like previous posters it's never been a big deal. it's just a curiousity.

I've research this and it seems normal, everyone comments that the stock tune on these cars isn't the best...hence the idle hiccups as well.

I had a vac line off and made rough idle on cold start. After I found the leak, no more issues, but does the hiccup like everyone else though. I never thought anything about that...

You can hear it here at 9 sec:

My 996TT does the same exact thing. I don't consider this an issue

Yesterday morning, I was watching the gauges much more carefully as I started my cold engine (darn this forum ). I'm wondering if it has something to do with all the electronics starting up for the car. It seems that the dip in the rpms comes right as some of the gauges and digital display comes to life. Of course, it could be a cause and effect the other way too. With the quirks in the radio, gas tank, etc -- I wouldn't be surprised if it's just another "character" of the car. Just a thought....
