My RMS How-To from Back in the Day...

I don't know if any of you saw this but I did an RMS on my last 00 996 Coupe. It is just to give you an idea but answers many questions on the rear main problem.

Enjoy...

+1 for you, followed the very same instructions and pics when i replaced my seal, bolts etc.
along with clutch. fwiw those intructions and pics are awesome. However it's leaking again i was very angry but read a post somewhere of someone a third and some on a 4th seal. I won't rant and I'm not ready to do it again just yet.

I'm on my 4th in 36K miles. Supposedly the parts have been upgraded AGAIN. This kit came with new flywheel bolts. Good luck.

These directions are very good and the pictures are really helpful. This provides great DYI information for those dealing with RMS, intermediate shaft issues and even a simple clutch replacement.

flat6, would you be willing to post your instructions to this or other Porsche oriented forums so that they get more exposure to the p-car community?
http://forums.rennlist.com or http://www.renntech.org or here?

Thanks!

Great write up. Stupid design. No wonder the thing leaks all the time. Nothing really holds it in place but friction. I replaced my RMS while replacing the clutch. My mechanic warranteed the RMS for 2 years. This is the standard dealer warranty for an RMS replacement as well. Ask your tech to give you a warranty.

My RMS is leaking for second time at 55,000 miles.
First one was at 35,000 miles (previous owner)

My dealer tells me I should replace the RIS (Rear intermediate seal) while he's there for the RMS. Where is this RIS, i expected it behind the RMS as I read somewhere that you had to drop the oil to change the RIS but not if you only change the RMS.

Thanks

Yes, have it done, almost nothing in parts and the large part of the labor is all done for the RMS. They should also replace the bots on the intermediate shaft. Engine failures have been reported for the bolt shearing and the fragments destroying the inside of the engine.

Also, I'm on my 4th RMS and had the intermediate shaft seal replaced along they way. It's not a big deal.

It sits most of the time 1 week, sometimes 2 weeks in the garage between runs.
it also sits in the garage 4-5 months in winter, starting it once per month.

My car was a bit of a garage queen before I bought it. Roughly 5Kmiles a year. Now I'm putting about 12Kmiles on it a year.

Great post, thanks so much. I'm a firm believer that the more you use a vehicle, the less likely problems will occur. I've had great luck with several cars & motorcycles that I used every day. 80k miles on a stock Harley in 4 years without missing a beat. My firends who drive their cars/motorcycles once in a while are always repairing something.

Just my thoughts....
