996 Audio/Visual Setups

For those of you who know me, i dont want to say that i'm keeping my car....but lets just say that it's not going anywhere anytime soon

I do need to upgrade my audio system though because the previous stuff looks like the west indian dope smoking team went to town on it, and dispite my best efforts, I can't quite improve on it to get it to sound right.

I do want to replace the amp since i think it's on its last legs. Maybe the head unit and might as well replaced the speakers since...well..i lots one of the rears (don't ask).

My goals are as follows:
- Good sound quality with solid mids and some low ends (no ear piercing overblown mids and highs).
- No subwoofers
- Only 1 Amp
- GPS would be a nice bonus
- Must play MP3's...not sure if i really need a dvd player since i barely ever use them now as is

Is everyone using the standard Focal/Audison combination for sound? I dont need anything overkill, hell I was happy with the stock hi-fi package till things started getting ripped out.

Also, if you could post pics of your setups that would b wikid

thanks man!
i was looking at the alpine blackbird with dock, but apparently the blackbird is the ****tyist GPS system ever, so that's out.

Do u guys actually use DVD players in ur cars? i don't honestly think i use mine all that much, i'm thinking of just going back to an audio only head unit so that i dont have to put the nasty lookin lower center console back in.

also..amps: 6 channel or 4 channel?

Omar --

I'm currently spec'ing mine out as well, but here is my plan:

AMP: Audison LRX 6.9
Speakers: Hertz 3way for dash and doors
Subs: 2 8" custom enclosures on floor behind seats (I have cab)
HU: Kenwood DNX7100 or DDX8019 (and buy KNA-G510 as seperate) .. It's the whole 2V vs 5V argument and I can't decide which.
Sirius Sat Radio: SIR-KEN1
Ipod in glove box

Clear, crisp sound .. just like my home theater is the goal.

Hope this helps
Rob

You guys actually do something other than drive your cars? I can't imagine having an A/V setup in a 911, that is what the Range is for.

Actually, it's all about the A and not the V for me. Plus, it's handy to have a large screen so I can point at large icons while driving 100+.

I understand that you want to keep it simple yet effective, but you can't achieve very good sound quality w/o a subwoofer. Its an audio fact. The low-end makes up for so much of the music its insane. I would rethink the "no-sub" and at least go with an 8" or 10". Just my .02.

30% of ALL music is sub-sonic and beyond the capabilities of conventional speakers. You can make it sound GOOD, but an exceptional sounding system MUSt have a sub and be able to play down to at least 25hz. Below 20hz is inaudible to the human ear. If you need some pointers, deals on equipment, etc, Pm me. I am one of about 106 mecp master certed installers in the US. I used to be an iasca SQ judge back in the day as well. Its best to keep it simple in a sports car, but make a list of features yoou want/need, and the goals and go from there. Hope that helps. My recommendations for exceptional sound equipment is Mcintosh amps, focal or dynaudio speakers, and eclipse, clarion, alpine radios with monster cable wiring. if you want recording studio type sound i reccomend getting and audio control eq and have it tuned on an rta meter.

denis,
thanks for the info.
i'm not looking for audiophile quality car stereo, just something good with all levels properly balanced for comfy listening on road trips.
my recording quality is far from audiophile grade anyhow, all my high end audio is in my house.

what brands/gear do you deal with? I was thinking of starting with an alpine 4 channel amp, or maybe the mcintosh 6 channel. Should i keep the components, or change to something else? I don't listen to hiphop/R&B at all, so i dont need the uber sub layout or anything, sub 20 isn't important at all in this case, and i'd probably even be willing to sacrifice a bit more of the lower audio spectrum anyhow, but before we get into that, lets see what can put toghether.

dynaudio, focal, alpine, clarion, audison, mcintosh, eclipse, DLS, peripheral, PAC, soundgate. Just because you dont want audiofile grade sound doesnt mean you cant buy a reputable european/us brand. Different countries make equipment with different sound. Just because you dont want to break the bank on buying super expensive audio gear, doesnt mean you cant buy something from their lower lines that would sound better than something from say rockford or JL audio's high end stuff. When you have a really good setup with good gear, it starts to cost ALOT to noticable sound better. its alot like engine performance, to a point, each HP starts to cost a ton after a certain point. What is your total budget

My system...Kenwood DDX7015, Audsion LRX 6.9 amp, AI Design Subwoofer with 8" JL Audio Driver, Focal 3 ways in front (6.5" in door 4" mid and 1" tweeter in dash), Focal 2 way in rear (4" mid and 1" tweeter)....One word...AMAZING. I think the Audison/Focal combo in the 996 is a wonderful setup. CLean, clear, and plenty of power.

haha, newport, i was searching up your setup on 6speed and the audison install looks soooo clean and nice! i'm definitly going to have someone make me a false bottom (99 c2's didn't come with one)

denis,

budget for the speakers and amp is like..1500$? 2g's? I have a head unit that's fine for right now..it's nothing special, just a B.O.S.S audio dvd deck but it does the job.

You do not need to have a false bottom if using the Alpine PDX line of amps the have a small footprint and nice SQ. I used pinoneer D3 HD, MB Quart QSC 210 speakers/crossovers, one Sub and Alpine PDX 4.100 amp. I would consider this a middle of the line system with nice musical sound.
