i have a 99 996 in arena red... i am the second owner...
the car has the usual front bumper nicks and dings, but also some unusual spots on the rear decklid.. like someone spilled brake fluid or some sort of paint remover on it.. the spots are minor but an annoyance...
so should i paint it? should i paint the entire car or just the trouble spots...
thanks

i think it all depends on how much you want to spend and/or how much it really bugs you.
IMHO, i think to make it look right, you'll probably want to paint the entire car since it sounds like you have more of a generalized paint issue. if it were just the front bumper, i'd say just paint that area. but, since it's another completely diff. area, maybe do the entire car. it's going to cost a pretty penny....but is it worth it to you?
also, how long do you plan on keeping the car? that would be a consideration as well.
best wishes with whatever you choose! then again, what do i know? i've never painted my car. =)

If the rest of the car paint is still in good condition then all you need to do is paint the front & rear decklid. Save money and keep the value. Make sure to shop for a reputable body shop for color matching.
Front should cost $300 and rear $400. GL!!!

i was thinking about value primarily... i have worked hard to bring this car up to a great condition.. mechanically, and visually on the interior.... and i dont want to do something stupid that is going to cost me money...
thanks everyone...

As long as you don't sell the car to the dealership/carmax repainting panels will be fine. You average joe doesn't typically have the tools to check paint thickness.

I'd only repaint the parts with issues. What you have to consider the most is the shop doing the work. A LOT of people re-spray their front bumper, but if not done by a quality shop, who's knowledgeable and seasoned with Porsche paints for applications both bumper AND deck-lid, (NOTE: additives required for bumper), than you'll regret doing it.
Search these forums and other auto forums for a well respected shop with great endorsements.
I’ve done the front bumper quite successfully, but it was after visiting several shops and checking out what they were working on, and condition of the shop. You’d be amazed how good a feeling you can get about a shop from a few Saturday morning visits.
Hope this helps.

Remember the best paint job is from the factory when they bake it on.
If I was buying a car and someone told me the bumper and decklid were re-painted, it would be no big deal. If they told me the whole car was re-painted, I would walk, because I wouldn't know about the quality of the paint job. BTW, most shops during an inspection will be able to tell wether it has been re-painted.

i will do that... fortunately i have been researching quality shops in my area for awhile.... and there is one that sticks out from the rest...
i will wait until spring to do it though.... or does it matter?

It’s a toss up. If you’ll be using the car through the winter, you’re bound to get a little more road-rash on the bumper with the salt and sand used on the roads. This will make you regret doing it before the spring, so wait.
If you’re going to store it for the winter, than paint it now and store it. For all the gasses to exhaust off the newly painted parts will take 14 days minimum, with a temperate garage. If the garage is cold-storage, then longer – in Canada, much longer. So the longer you have the car sitting without any wax or sealant on it the better off the long-term results will be.
Depending on just how you feel about keeping rash free paint – you may consider a clear bra – but research the h*ll out of them as there are different finishes for different reasons.
Search this and detailing forums to understand the different types and the ‘visual’ results you’ll get.

thanks for the info.... i havent heard the greatest things about clear bra installers in my area.... so that is a tuff one... and my car is probably going to sleep soon... for about 3 months min.
