dead battery bought new sears diehard 12 volt reading on install

the temp the past few days in nyc has been in the teens and my 03 911 C2 has been starting a little slowly. Today after work i drove to visit a friend and when i came out 30 min later the car wouldn't start. i got a jump and the volt meter read b/t just below 12 and 10. i barely made it to my gf's house with the meter reading close to 10. i drove her car to sears and bought a new diehard, installed in it my car when i got back. the volt meter read 12 when i first installed the battery. i didnt drive the car but let it run for about 20 min and the volt meter still read 12. do i have to drive the car to get the alternator to charge the battery up to 14-15 volts. does this sound like an alternator problem?

If your battery stays at around 12v with the car running, you probably have an alternator issue. If your alternator is running, you should be seeing around 14v.

Go to Pelicanparts.com. or Automotion.com. Price is around $325.

For a new OEM one (don't know about reman or non-OEM), make sure you check out Sunset in OR, they have been great to work with, and usually have the best prices.

Here is the info from PelicanParts:

One other thing to check on........you'll typically be charged more for the core (until you return it), but some of the auto supply shops may not have the pully on the alternator, so you'd have to get a puller to get yours off first. (But the one on PP looks to have it)
