Cheap Tires Stink
Dry traction, noise level and ride are good, wet traction is bad. Wife spun her Boxster on a downward sloping, 270 degree fwy onramp in the rain. She drives very safe and slow so I gotta point the finger at the tires.

Low pressure or nail on the road? or potholes?
I'm on my 3rd set of Sumitomos and like them just fine. I have not tracked the car yet, so my experience is only on public roads. They don't make the HTRZ IIs anymore. I like the HTRZ III better just looking at them. The ride is pretty good too. I can't wait to thrash them this weekend.

HRTZ IIs are still made according to this;

Yet another off brand that I have used is Falken, especifically RT-615 model. Supposed to be a tad better in the dry than the HTRZII, but after 5K miles on them, driving in the rain is always an "interesting" experience. Can't have it all I guess

The RT615 is as close as you are going to come to an R compound for the street (think Toyo RA1). Next time around (assuming the car has not sold by then), I will be looking for a more "forgiving" tire as these are extremely hard, loud, and not water friendly. That said, the dry grip is something almost unbelievable.

I wanted to go 295/18/30 on the rear and could not find HTRZIIs. So, I bought the HTRZIIIs all around - 295/30 rear 225/40 front. Grip is MUCH better than the IIs. I had a very "spirited" driving session last weekend and I was very impressed - smoother ride with much less noise and more "stick" on some turns I know well. At $700 and change for tires, mounting and balance, I think Sumitomo represents a pretty good deal.
