about to get my first porsche, need advise.

I just found a white/grey 2001 porsche c2 for $31K and it seems to be in good conditions.

I know some porsches from 99-00 had problems with the engine and most of them were swapped.

Anyways, what are the common problems in a 2001 c2? What should I check?

Maybe it's better you get a 2002 or up with the 3.6 engine. The 99-01 C2's have the same 3.4 motor if this is your concern. Also, search this forum for threads with similar topics. Good luck with your purchase. Post pics as soon as they're available.

Don't forget PPI.

I have 99 c2 with 93k miles with no major engine problems. I replaced the coolant tank but the engine has been reliable. I am the second owner.

Sure there are horror stories out there. You just have to know the history of the car, who drove it? was it autocrossed? is it a tip? Most porsche drivers take care of their cars very well and then, there are those who don't.
So saying that, i wouldn't shy away from a 99-01......if the price is right. You can find well-equipped specimen out there for a steal. Make sure you have it checked out by porsche dealer or a well-educated indy.

Have you looked at a C4s? if i had my to do over again, I'd get a C4.

Of course we would all like to have newer cars but sometimes things are what they are.

Anyway, good luck in your search.

I have a 01 Cab* and it has no problems and runs very strong. I feel like towards the end around the 01's porsche had made great progress in engine problems. Other then the engine problems and Rms these cars a good bullet proof DD'ers. Maybe get the vin# and see if you can get a service history on the car to see what bugs it may have had. Good luck!

Major changes to the '02 and up. Remember that there are lots of options available on these cars. Make sure the one you pick has the options that you want. And have a PPI done.

Thank you all for your replies!

I do understand in 2002 the engine and other things were changed for good but it is difficult to find one for a good price in the desired color (white or light silver).

I had a 2000 and 2002 996 . The cars differed and the 02 had a few upgraded amenities but in my particular case I faced more snags with the 02 . all that says is that cars differ and I read a post right on this thread where 93K miles still is running great .

Here are a list of things to consider :
1) RMS -- It means a leak in the "rear main seal" . Some 996 cars never faced a problem while others have . Google search it and read . The big problem if the car has no warranty is that it can be an expensive repair .
2) Xenon light theft --Particularly the 02 model but not at all uncommon in all other Porsches including the 997 . Especially in South Florida . Look for oaint and body repair where xenons could have been taken .
3) I faced a "slave cylinder" replacement with my 200 clutch.
Both of my cars were kept to 22K miles , then traded so long term wear I have no comments on.

Good luck.

I am having tough times getting approved for the loan because I will be buying from a private party and not a dealership.

Wachovia will not finance cars older than 5 years.
Bank of America only approved me for $16K due to the program I applied for.

Where to go next?
