This is similar to the "disappearing tailgate" found on full-sized GM station wagons circa 1970-1975 (or thereabouts)? The glass window went up into the roof, and the tailgate went down under the floor. The design had several flaws. To make the window go up into the roof, the back had to be angled forward quite a bit (vs. squared off), so it resulted in a smaller cargo area. Also, the space where the tailgate dropped into was also wasted, so the cargo area was further diminished. GM went to a traditional tailgate design on the next generation of its full-sized cars.
