used 996 vs new corvette
You should watch this Top Gear clip where Hammond talks about C6.
Those guys always have an interesting view on American cars.

I have driven both and decided on my Porsche instead of the corvette. One of several reasons was the way Porsches are built and feel. The tightness and handling are awesome. My second was the fact that my 5 year old could not ride in a 2 seater since she has to be in the back and in a booster seat. The rear seat fits her just well. The third is the head turning. There are corvettes on every corner where I live since I am right in the middle of NASCAR country and every race shop. My car stands out among the crowd since there aren't many at all in my town. I say go with the Porsche.
i'd be inclined to own a car my wife wasn't interested in driving. the more she likes your car the more she'll vie for it. if you're good at sharing it won't be a problem, but if this is "your car" it might be worth considering something she either doesn't like or is afraid to drive.
My wife's welcome to drive our P-car, but doesn't for fear that Murphy's law would kick in while she was behind the wheel.

Given the choice between a similar valued used loaded 996 and new base model corvette, what would you drive? Some Porsche pros: Porsche prestige and German fit and finish. Some Corvette pros: Horsepower, torque, and new car warranty. My wife thinks the Corvette is a "redneck" car and wouldn't be caught in one. I know this is a Porsche forum, so don't be too harsh on the American muscle car!
Have you seen the "lottery winner" show on TV? What does every lottery winner seem to go out & buy? Corvette. Hmmm... Smart?
Same people who run out & buy a suit of armour to decorate their house. As the lottery winner is turning around to show the camera their new house they bought, I do believe I've seen a few scarlet colored necks. ;o)

I was faced with this option a few months ago when replacing my 996 (after an accident). After reviewing both cars (and a slew of others) I decided on another 996. I did this based on several reasons, road connectivity on the vette is very different than on the 996. In the 996, you feel so much more connected to the road as sensitivity in the steering wheel is so much more communicative. The car feels dramatically smaller and lighter than the newer vette (even though it's not that much heavier than my car). Also the brakes feel better on the 996.
The vette is hands and above faster than my 996 in a straight line. But when it comes to driving dynamics, I felt the 996 is a better car. I felt like I was engulfed by the C6 as it is so long and wide (other driving dynamics aside). With the 996, I felt in tune and part of the car.
Faster is not necessarily more fun. Try driving a Miata or an E30 BMW. Insanely fun cars to drive, while greatly rewarding. Just like the 996.
Exclusivity arguments put aside.

I have owned both...and it comes down to do you like to drive your car? or do you like the car to drive you?
the 996 is a perfect driver's car, great driving position, fantastic gear box, its the kind of car you go hunting for corners in.
the C6 is very relaxed, the car has to many options that take the driving aspect away from the car, the gear box is crap. the quality of the C6, rather the corvette in general has seen to be declining since the early 90s, the interior has gotten cheaper, if you look at the body pannels they dont go together at edges just right, I started noticing this on the C5s and now the C6s

i have a friend that has one as well; mind bendingly fast, but horrible ride, very notchy gear box, and he can't ride in it for more than about 45 miutes without feeling pistol-whipped. It's a great drag car, but not much else.
OK this might upset some people here but, the C6 is a much better car then the C2/C4.Its a better bang for the buck and out performs the NA 996 in every way. That
being said if your going to track the car you might want to consider the Porsche. Now I say go for a Turbo......but i might be a bit bias
