C2 or C4S?

I'ts time for my first 911 (LONG time lurker) - and Im looking at a 2002-2004 911 C4S versus a regular C2. I've read the myriad posts regarding the bigger brakes, stiffer suspension versus the extra weight...

I was wondering not so much about what will be faster on (my inevitable) track days, but if any of you could share insight into maintenance etc...

My plan would be, someday, to turn it into a nearly track-only car, but I am worried about the long term reliability of AWD.

Threads are worthless without pics... here is the departing baby...

IMO, you are answering your own question. If you really foresee turing it into a track car, why go AWD?

I have not heard of problems with the AWD system with track use, but do you really want all that extra weight at the track? According to Porsche the C4S weighs 275 lbs more than a Mk II C2. That is no small amount.

AWD system is bulletproof. As far as a track car...a C2 may be better.....

Why wouldn't the AWD be a better choice ? granted its not going to be the traditional rear drive feel, but the AWD should make it more planted and corner better... shouldn't it ?

Not bashing the C4S but a properly setup C2 is pretty hard to beat at the track

I would do the C4S. My friends dad had a C4S Cab and Ive never been in a car to this day that handled like that thing, and the looks are UNMATCHED on a 4S IMHO of course

Thanks to all for the replies.

I think AWD should have some serious theoretical benefits at the track... but Im not sure I have enough skill (wait, Im certain I don't have enough skill) to exploit the car to the fullest - so to me, the lower weight is probably more significant.

The C4S is just so sexy.

Hmmmmm... I guess it will depend on the deal.

Its the opposite...The C4S will be easier to drive fast....The C2 having the same HP will be lighter and so it will go faster, stop faster and turn faster. Now since most track days are about having fun and not "racing" get the one YOU like better, they drive differently. FYI the C4S lapped the nurburging faster due to better brakes and wider tires...so if both cars are stock, the C4S "could" be faster depending on the driver and track....

In addition to being heavier, the AWD will push like a pig in the corners. AWD will give you more traction in the corners, but on a dry track, the carrera doesn't suffer from lack of traction.

not true...dialing in the suspension and you will have ZERO understeer in an AWD car.....on a dry track, you will have more traction, meaning you can carry more speed in and out of corners...there is a point where a 2wd will lose traction and thats USUALLY slower than the point an AWD car will lose traction...its why people who drive the C4S say its "boring" because the back doesnt step out, and it handles like its on rails...the C2 powerslides more easily and therefore has a different feel....some find that more fun.

Hard to dial that much camber into the stock suspension.

Compared to my C2 and GT3, my turbo definitely pushes a lot more.

Truthfully, for most people (me included), you are not going to notice a huge difference out on the track.
