C2 or C4S?
C2 or C4S?
Hello -
I am getting ready to purchase my first Porsche and have decided on a 2002 996 Coupe. I am curious if the C4S is worth the extra cash? According to the specs, the C2 is faster, but I love the look of the C4S and the all-wheel-drive and upgraded brakes are a nice bonus.
What do you guys think?

I think the C4S is a great first Porsche for anyone. It's handling is excellent and you can't beat the great brake system it comes with. Sure, you really can't smoke the tires but, it's got a great launch that has an advantage over the C2. I've beaten many of stock C5 Corvettes because of the AWD places the power to all wheels where and when needed. It just pulls away during launch and keeps on walking. It's great to hear a V-8 breathing hard as you whip it with an H6. If you do get it, leave the suspension alone because it's already lower than the C2 and that's just barely legal in some states.

I was faced with the same decision. I was sold on the C4S after driving both back to back. The suspension is far better (though you can duplicate it with the narrowbody M030 ROW), and of course the appearance is more aggressive.
Not to take away from the narrowbody 996s, they are certainly more of a purist's platform, and the aero kit on the 996 is completely badass.
I will say this though: the standard suspension on the 996 C2 is_way_too_floaty. That chassis deserves a real suspension. But, I'm a bit jaded, since I spend a bit of time at the track.

Thanks for the feedback, gang. I too think the looks and performance of the C4S are going to push me over the edge. It looks like the $10K price delta between a C2 and C4S are clearly justified.
Tell me, why do many of the stats on the C2 show a faster 0-60 than the C4S? If the C4S launches better why am I seeing a .02 lag to 60 compared to a C2? I assume weight is the key factor, but I would figure the AWD would compensate for the weight gain?

One thing no one has mentioned are the extra options that come standard with a C4S! Like the full leather interior, the xenons, PSM (i think?)... You add in the cost of those options on a standard carrera and the price difference suddenly isn't that great.
If I could do it over again, i'd pay the extra few K for a C4S.
