997 Release = Low 996 Pricing?

So what's the word on the street - would somebody be crazy to buy a 2002 996 today if we know the 997 is a few months away?

Can we expect used 996 prices to drop significantly (ie. C4S) once the 997's are the talk of the town?

You have already taken a HUGE hit on your GS...the new GS is around the corner and dealers are paying less than wholesale already because of it....The 996 prices have already dropped because of the 997, they probably won't go down much more. C4's drop less than C2's historically. If you like it buy it, the dealers are more motivated to sell once the 997's hit the showrooms.

Yeah I hear ya - I may take a hit on the GS....however I have sold some modded cars to kids and recouped the cash. Otherwise, I will part it out and lose a few grand.

Thanks for the feedback. I will probably wait for the 997s to hit and then buy a 996 from owners that trade-in to upgrade to the 997.

Here is a little observation.

997=$$$$$
996=$$
993=$$$
964=$

The 996 now has more in common with the 964 in value/style/red- headed stepchild/ respect.

997= what 996 should of been in the first place

996 prices dropped (are dropping) like a rock

With the new 997... It's Porsche's way of saying that our 996's were somewhat mistakes- i.e. retro 993.

After seeing the 997 pictures over this last year, I have to agree. The 997 IS what the 996 SHOULD of been in 1999.

I love the look of the 993's, but loved the 996 chassis/drivetrain- except for the damn RMS's.

The 997= Best of everything....on paper and in photos

I really do not want my 996 anymore sniff, sniff.....

Anyone want it?
Look for an Ebay ad very soon.

C.

I'am interested to know why you would buy a 996 if you didn't like the way it looks? just for the chassis/drivetrain? seems strange.

plavan, imho u r being too harsh on the 996! yes the 99-01s look too much like a boxster, but i think they did a good job w/ 02+s. and the 996 C4S and TT look very sexy w/ the wide butt.

Synergy, great idea. If only C. had a 2002+ car you'd be set up.

Roy, I agree buying a car for chasis/drivetrain? Seems strange.

I had a 993. The 996 drives better at everyday driving. That's what sold me on the 996. The 993 has always "looked" better than the 996. Do not get me wrong, the 996 is still a good car. It will just be known as the "oops" car a few years down the road. All I am saying is that the 997 looks to be the best of both worlds. Chassis/looks. With Porsche making the 997 look like a cross between a 993 and 996..... thats Porsche's way of saying "Yeah... it should of been this way before". In a few years the 996's will be like the red headed step children (if not already).... Very similar to the 964's 1990-1994. Who wants those now?

These are just my observations and opinions.
The 996 is a fun. The 997 should be a blast in looks and chassis.

Opinions are like elbows, everyone has one, you have a poor opinion of the 996 and thats to bad, the 996 is a step in the evolution of porsche and I think it's a great car, good looks, great handling, lots of power..... you should have stepped up to a 02 or newer model... maybe then you'd think differently.......

I understand what you are saying. I just have been down this road before (no pun intended). Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Do not get me wrong, the 996 is a good, fun car. I just was never taken by its styling. I just know where the value will be in a year or so. The sad thing is that 993's are selling more than some 996's now if that says anything. I will say it again, most people feel the 993's have the better styling and the 996's have the better chassis.
Your right, I could of stepped up to a 02 or newer... But I'm glad I didn't. The 997's are on their way. That way I get the best of both worlds.

I don't think the RMS issue is going away with the inception of the 997. They are still using the M96 platform...

The RMS in the 997 model has a new part number and is being out sourced to a different supplier, I'm told it should not be a problem in the 05 model.

Some cars had crank defects, but many leaks were caused by a poorly designed seal and by improper installation.
