Passed The Califorina Smog Test

Well, since I own my car I have done some mod. like header, muffler, intake, ECU reflashed. This morning I took it in for smog test to get registration renewal. Car passed with flying color.

I have heard horror stories about spending $$$ on the mod. and when the time come your car will not able to pass the test. Today, it proved all these stories are wrong.

Great news. What mods do you have? If you have a supercharger and still passed, you da man!!! And if you don't, you're still cool

None of those things would cause it to fail on the machine, the 996 is a clean running car...but if they would have known what to look for it would not have passed on the visual inspection...but most people have never seen a Porsche engine, so they dont know the difference....congrats!

any good smog places in the OC area that you guys can recommend? Are they open on the weekends? First time smogging. Crossing my fingers, hope that my car will pass, I have a CEL light for my o2 censors but the car runs fine.

Adybuncio- your car is "censored" - LOL

I go to this crusty old gas station near corner of robertson / Pico in Beverly Hills. There is one guy working there and his normal cars are beat up chevys and hondas.

to attest to some shops not knowing about pcars.. when I bought my 996 in Texas i had to have it smogged and brought it there. He actually popped the hood and said, seriously, "where's tha dang engine"? LMAO.

Very nice guy tho- have never had probs taking a modded euro car there. As long as it blows clean it's good 2 go. cheap smog check price too

Newport is 100% correct...when I registered my car...I took it to this smog place..the guy just passed me...why? he said my Porsche C2 cab was ALL WHEEL DRIVE and his dyno couldnt test it...so instead of losing my business he just passed me. Did the usual exh thingy and my gas cap. I didnt educate him...just let it go.

As for Andy...if the smog sees the CEL you will fail. No ifs ands or buts. A CEL is automatic fail.

Yes a CEL is automatic fail...AI, I had the OPPOSITE experience in my C4 Cab....they pulled in, and just as they were about to run it on their 2wd dyno...I said, uh you do know this is an AWD car...he said...Oh...ok...well I guess I cant do that then....pass....I shudder to think of the damage they were about to do....and it was such a hole in the wall place, it would have bankrupted them.....lol

As long as you have OEM cats and good working 02 sensors you will pass, even with a decent amount of mods. CEL is always an automatic fail.

Why don't you replace the oxygen sensor? The place I had it done charged me total $30. Not bad at all.

Some places do have the appropriate dyno machines, and the car still must pass the exhaust pipe test and the visual....just not the under load tests...

Mine passed with a dirty great supercharger bolted to it.
There was some head-scratching going on though from the tech.

With a CEL you will fail....you must clear it before you smog it for it to pass. If you need a smog guy to pass you let me know.

I have to get my car smog checked in the very near future in LA as well. How much is the typical cost? (I have no clue, we didnt have that in Canada) Also, does anyone know of a place that can do AWD vehicles?

Any place can do an AWD vehicle....its just whether or not they can do the load test on a AWD capable dyno....if they dont have one, they just to the tests they can, if it passes those, then you pass....
