996 N/A Mods

Hey Guys.. I have a follow-up request for information to a previous post about dyno numbers. I have begun to enhance my '02 and would like the honest low-down on gains. Obviously if you sum the manufacturer gains on average for a plenum, intake, headers, exhaust and tune, you've got a 430 crank hp car, which is a quite a bit optimistic...I would think 350 is more realistic. I'm going to add the mods regardless, especially the weight reducing parts, but what is a realistic gain for these at the wheels or crank ?
I bought the plenum first (only purchase so far) and will be going to the dyno before install to get a baseline Mon or Tues. Any recommended order of mods? I am thinking tune last...
One more item..dry filter a no-brainer or are the filter oil rumors substantiated without excessive re-oiling ?

Thanks for the thoughts and info..

First, you're not getting 400+hp with these mods. SC is the only mod. that gives your N/A that magic number.

Second, if you have the dough to spend immediately start with headers, 200 cel cats, SS muffler. These will give better sound. Intake, plenum for better breathing. And after all these mods. you still have the cash and itching for more go with LWFW and SSK. Remember, to do some suspension work like Pss9, GT3 sway bar & drop link.

That was my point...I don't see netting more than 350hp with those mods, yet the claims add up to much more.
I plan to dyno after every mod and offer results on the standouts..
Also heard to use a 986 MAF..any thoughts as to why? Thanks..

Well, I'm not hearing anything about using Boxster MAF for 996. Maybe I should do some research on this subject.

for pre 2000 996 we use the old MAF. all boxsters were upgraded to a new MAF which is similar to the 2000+ MAF used on 996.

these new MAF are not backwards compatible to my knowledge (LIMITED), but no performance gains are noted just a more reliable MAF from what i understand

Thanks for the info. I don't need to look into it.

maybe I am off here BUT

The bang for your buck in "mods" isn't there on 996's. I just ponied up $250 for hopefully 18 more hp. The next step is exhaust at AT LEAST $1100. Coming from the BMW Community the hp/$ ratio is a sticker shock but you either have the disposable income or you don't. And if you don't so what?? The 996 isn't slow. I think like ever other N/A owner I'm working on a 5 year plan to slide in a TT but until then I'll GLADLY take front row valet, beating ricers and having girls at work that haven't said **** to me in a year want to go for a ride because of the Porsche.

You can't add individual modifications advertised gains for a grand total. All of the claims advertised are on a stock or a stock+ engine.

I'm betting your cummulative gains with the mods listed net you 20hp at the wheels max. However the butt dyno and the wallet dyno will show you staggering results!!

Rush - I don't know that anyone here has done progressive dyno work as they've added mods. If you proceed, please share the results.

When I bought headers and mufflers for my 01 C2 from evoms, I was told I'd gain about 20HP/20TQ. I dynoed and didin't gain hardly anything. Tried to return them but to no avail. I bought their original intake (the one that sucks in hot engine air) was told of 7-10hp/tq gains, you guessed it 0 gains. Right after I bought my intake they came out with their new vflow. I asked for a cheap upgrade . . . you can guess the answer to that. Including installation i wasted around 3,000 with evolution motorsports for nothing. I would get a muffler because of the sound. Your best bet I would think is ebay or used somewhere. It's a muffler, who cares if it's new.

Please post up before and after dyno if you already have dynoed it. Thanks.

This was done a few year ago. I think I still have the dyno sheets. I'll see if I can find them.

That would be great if you can post it. I wanted to see if there are any gains or loss through the entire hp/tq curve. Maybe there is no peak hp/tq gain but it would be useful to get some extra tq in the low rpm range.
