996 C4S alternator

Dear Friends,

I'm new to the site, but have enjoyed the forums for some time. My daily driver is a 1979 911sc with 326k, and new engine parts at 160k.

My 2003 C4S is out of warranty, but only has 14k miles. Drives just great. But last monday the warning light came on, the voltmeter dropped, and suddenly I'm forced to put on another alternator. so far it appears that all other systems are fine.

Is this something anyone out there has experienced? your collective wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Now that I've finally registered on this very cool website, I'll post a few pictures just for fun. Best to all....

JJ,

Obviously, this is not normal from my experience with the alternator 'failing" in 17K miles. On the other hand, how old is your battery?? Is it the original?? If it is, it could be the battery needing replacement. With so low miles, this car doesn't get driven that often and the OEM german batteries are usually only good for 4 years or so.

If you have it running, take it to your favorite trusted shop ( worse case a Sears auto center) and have them load test it. It will determine battery health as well as charging circuit.

Good Luck!! Demosan

thanks for the good thoughts and good advice. the battery has been replaced once already and checked out as ok. and there was an electrical signal going to the generator. the problem seems to be the output. a new one is going in as we speak and a new Interstate battery as well. time to call the shop and see how things are going. thanks again...

new alternator and new battery installation completed this afternoon. car is running fine, voltmeter hangs at or just below 14, and goes down a bit more when the auto a/c is turned on. does this seem like the normal expected range? thanks, j

Had exactly the same thing happen with my old 2002 carrera. Everything was fine after I got the alternator replaced, though I was a bit peeved at having to deal with it just out of warranty.

The PO of my car had the alternator replaced at around 30K miles... almost 1G in repair at the local dealer... sorry it went on you.
