Question for "West Coast" owners???
So I'm new to this car ('99 C2) and living in the Reno, NV area realize that I can only get 91 octane "premium" for the car. The car wants 93 octane (preferably), but it's not available in this area since we get our gas from California. So what are you "guys/girls" running in your cars in CA/west coast with only 91 octane available from your "standard" stations? And what options do I have to boost the octane to 93 safely on a regular basis so the "ECU" can "learn" it ..... make sense?
I'm concerned about pushing the car hard, especially since I'm at altitude (aprox. 4500')??? I'm sure the ECU compensates for "knocking" but doesn't it take a long recovery time for the ECU to return timing back and restore performance to the car (like months)?
In California I run 91 with no problems, in Idaho there is 93. Tried them both and never felt or realized a difference. Granted maybe it was an altitude thing between San Francisco and Boise... but still there was no noticable difference.

Yes, I realize the "computer" will adjust for 91 octane, but my understanding is that the computer is pulling timing out of the motor to compensate for the decreased octane rating (since it was designed for 93) which is decreasing power. I'm just trying to get the power back!
I run Chevron Supreme, which is 91, and have had no issues.
I have read that California's octane calculation is different than some other states', and that the actual octane in California 91 would be rated at 93 in other states. I didn't follow the technical mumbo-jumbo, and don't know if it is true. I think the last time I saw this stated was over on rennlist, but it's been at least a year.

we get mostly 92 octane here in seattle. once in a blue moon you can find 93. i personally use shell gasoline, premium.
