Mine never looks black. I change mine every 3,000-3,500 miles with fully synthetic.

it's like asking how many minutes does it take for your dress shirts to get wrinkled?

i changed mine a 10k and then 13k mi. dark brown each time and still ok compared to other cars changed at recommended svc intevals. i think 10-15k of street driving or every 2 yrs is fine.

for those that change far more often. i've heard there is actually a downside to this other than your wallet and environment. i read it somewhere that oil when new isn't optimal in protection bc of the additives used in oil. additives don't protect engine but merely stabilizes the oil. don't know how much this is true but take it for what's it worth.

some still changes at 3k miles which i think is totally a waste. modern cars are 5k-7k at least using regular oil. our cars hold 9 qts which easily double that inteval.

Study shows regular oil starts to break down after 3K miles with reg. driving. Synthetic about 7K miles. So, it's up the driver to determine oil changes based on driving habits.
