what would you buy with $47K

All,

I happened to come across some moola and would like to meet one of my childhood dreams.

Owning a Porsche....

I have been researching for awhile now and came to the conclusion that a 996 would meet my needs as a daily comftorable driver.

The question is which driveline?

Do I buy a 99 and spend the extra cash on upgrades or 00...maybe 01???

Any help would be appreciated....

I bought a 99 C4 Cab for 47K, certified from a Porsche dealer. You can get a C2 Cab for low 40's. Most definately same some cash for mods, you'll want to personalize your car as much as possible I am sure. Everyone gets the Mods bug. So do you want Coupe or Cabriolet? Expect 5-10K more for a Cabriolet. 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, expect to pay 5-7K more for a 4 wheel drive. So least expensive is a 2 wheel drive coupe, somewhere in the low 40's depending on mileage. A cabriolet will be maybe 5k more, and a all wheel drive maybe 5k more from there. I would strongly suggest a Porsche dealer purchase with the Porsche certified warranty. For the most part these are VERY solid cars, but little things can be costly. In my 1st month of the C4 Cab, my dealer had to replace rear tires, window seal, center console hinge, fix valve cover oil leak, replace electric fan, and now it will go back for the exhaust. All from a Porsche "certified" car that is in excellent condition. All these things may have cost me thousands if I had to fix them, but they are free with a rental car while my car is in the shop, so I would not buy a Porsche without a factory warranty. My Boxster was withou warranty, but I was lucky on that one, it could have been a real money pit. Congrats and drive lots of them. Some "feel" better than others, and some are cared for better than others. I liked this 99 better than an 02 I was looking at as well. The 99 felt much better, drove better, and looked in better condition. Also look at the service records. This could tell you if there are any chronic issues with the car such as an RMS leak which may happen over and over again.

Depending on your location, you WILL pay a hefty premium right now for a CAB. (estimate more towards 10K than 5K...the 5K is for a time closer to winter).

When you ask about "driveline" - do you mean 6-speed vs. Tiptronic or 3.4L vs. 3.6L? MY99-01 were all 3.4L so I would opt for the 99 and use the rest for mods. (Unless of course you could get that SC beast for $47k...)

If I had an extra $47k burning a hole in my pocket, I'd probably put it towards more nice jewelry for my wife. That's about halfway towards a gorgeous necklace I'd like to get her.

With 47k you can get a very nice 996, I wouldn't go after a 99, I would look for a newer one. If your not that desperate, I would wait for the 997 to come out, then the 996 may come down in price, so then you could get even a newer one!
Just my .02

Thanx...

Everyone...Thanx for the feedback...

Not to disrespect the women we all love, but she just received a CLK 430 cab (AMG trim) and a new custom built home.

Now its time to be selfish....

When purchasing a vehicle, I am proponent of never buying "new", for the reasons that the car will depreciate and I can use the funds for more realistic reasons.

Nevertheless, I need a daily driver during the appropriate season and my first choice (1994 3.6T) would not be comfortable for everyday driving.

This brings me up to the 996 (newest Porsche that I could afford) which I feel offers quality and a comfortable ride.

I am interested in a coupe (CarreraScott…beautiful car) with the PSM option.

This brings me to a recent finding in September’s excellence magazine.

The 2000 was priced at 50350 in excellent condition, the 2001 at 41104 and the 2002 at 47588. Why such a discrepancy? Is this a typo or is the 2000 a more sought at car?
