My K&N Experience
Hi, I have K&N CAI installed for about a month.
It's very good but it also suck in alot of hot air from the engine, as such, I remove it & put the stock air box back with a Hurricane stainless steel air filter. It is better for city drive.

A friend that is a car salesman drove a 996 4S,Tip, stock. Then went with a ride with my 4s ,manual, and told me that my car is fast above 4K but at low rpm looks slower that the stock one.
Has any experienced any drop below 4K or is just a feeling due to improvement response and sound on high rpm?

- a tip is going to be slower than a stick, and unless your salesman friend remembers to bump the trans to 1st manually at a stop, or mash the gas pedal, the car usually starts out in second gear. If your only mod is the KN, then all you really get out of it is sound improvement. You'll need exhaust and optimally a flash to help take advantage of it performance wise. I love the KN just for the sound, have always run them on my pcars. On my 996 and 997 I had the KN, Afterhoursautomotive.com sport pipes, and IPD plenum. Heck of an improvement on all fronts.
Did your purchase a cold air intake kit or just the filter for the OEM air box?
Please let me know since I have been meaning to do this a while.
Can you post a link to the exact product your purchased?
Thanks!

I have this kit as well and I do like it. I've had it for about 5 years, some pointers. I changed the filter to an AEM Dry Filter. I was sick of getting the CEL on and it fried my MAF from the oils on the filter. Ever since the filter change no lights and still same sound.I also agree it's a pain to put together, putting that rubber/metal trim around the box could really be done at the factory for the price we pay for it! Enjoy.
What are the stock 997 dyno numbers?
Logically the plenum makes sooooo much since. The question comes from if a NA engine compared to a forced induction benefits the most from it.
I was convinced until just the other day. When Todd a tuner posted his shops finding on their dyno of a stock 997s.
His post was one of the better written test cases of the intake. They were testing it out to be able to endorse and sell it. At the end, they felt there was no gain on a NA with it. They were giving 2 separate intakes to test to make sure there wasn't a flaw.
I think for me since I have GHL pipes......my performance steps will be
K&N CAI
then a flash (probably softronic)

I think they are all pretty similar; however, I have the EVO CAI and am very happy with the contribution it makes to the performance of my 996. As far as visual appeal goes, I was leaning towards the Fabspeed with the CF cover!! Man, that really looks nice
. The cost is what stopped me

These intakes don't make a performance difference on the car. The air filter piping and filter isn't a restriction in terms of the engine lacking the air it needs to make power. The sound of them is great however. They do suck in hot engine compartment air, so at low speeds they rob you of power. At higher speeds, the hot air gets flushed out so you're not hurting your performance.
Before anybody says "But you have a Turbo" I used to have an NA 996 and I did a lot of testing with an intake and measuring temps with a point and shoot gun and determined the temps were higher where the car was pulling air from.

I did my 2002 c4, a few days back. I did notice two things. It is a bit slower off the line. At about 4000 RPM it makes up for it. Also it is nosier at start up for about 30 seconds and also idles a bit high for a few seconds. Sounds great and I love the increase in power on the high way. The plenum is next.

I'm thinking about this upgrade. I never did one on my 911SC. I have done it on other cars I own. I definately want to try the IPD Plenum. I'am taking my car to the track this weekend to see how it behaves when driven in anger.
