Speaker Question

Hi Everybody,

Oran from Burlington, Ont. 2001 996 Cabriolet. I would like to thank everyone for their recommendations when I first signed on. The bumperettes are at the body shop being painted to match the seal grey body and the clear side markers are on order. "Deckman" was right. This will be a big improvement.

I am not at all pleased with the factory stereo particularly with the top down. I am inclined at this point to leave the factory head unit in place for now in order to maintain the OE look. However I would like to upgrade the speakers. I have spoken with several online retailers including Crutchfield and all say that there is no direct aftermarket replacement designed to fit the 996 cutouts for either the front or rear panels. I realize that audio equipment is a very subjective topic however any thoughts or suggestions on solid upgrades without cutting up panels?

Thanks,
Oran.

I upgraded all the speaker in my996 Cab. and still no better sound when the top is down. The only way to get some nice deep sound in there is to take out the back seats and build a speaker box back there. Can't use the " trunk". very little sound comes through the firewall.

Talk to Rod at http://www.caraudioinnovations.com
He's got a few different options to keep the car from being modified a lot. I plan on getting my stuff from there this fall. Really knowledgeable and eager to help out.

As far as the head unit goes, I wouldn't bother changing the speakers if you're not changing the head unit, but that's just my $0.02.

see my thread, it took some money and a lot of hard work but it sounds very good and has plenty of volume and bass with the top down, you could prob go deaf with the top down

At over 100mph top down this system thumps. Clear sound, clear bass .. speakers alone won't get you what you're truly looking for.
