Require paint code for seal grey metallic?
Hi Guys,
Based on multiple recommendations from listers I am painting my bumperettes to match the body in Seal grey metallic. Body shop called today and want me to provide a paint code as a means of accepting responsibility for color match. I have a 2001 996 Cab. I have looked on the drivers pillar, under rear and front deck lids and even inside the fuel filler hatch for the paint code with no luck. I have also found conflicting codes online Y1Y1 and L6B5. Paint shop says neither is correct. They are suggesting it is a 3 digit code. Does anyone know the code for this color or the correct location for the label listing the color code on a 2001 996 Cab?

Paint code
I found my paint code under the hood of the car. I also had my Bumperetts painted. To be safe I removed the Gas door so they had something to color match. Removing the gas door was kinda painful because I actually broke something in the process. Ended up having the dealer fix it since my car is still under warranty. GL with the process. Make sure you get some touch up paint after their done! Comes in handy and the match is a lot better than what you get from the dealer.
Ummm, from what I understand, you can't use body shop spray paint as touch up. It will not lay or dry correctly. Every body shop has told me this. Maybe Eric @ Bumperplugs can chime it on this, but I've been told repeatedly to just get "real" touch-up paint.
My understanding is all touch up paint is a single stage whereas cars nowadays are painted with a dual stage (base coat/clear coat system) so yeah, all touch up paint isn't going to look/lay right compaired to the rest of the paint. I guess it just depends on what will look better, the touch up paint or the scratch???

Not only that, but it is just a different composition. You can take acetone to cured automotive body paint to remove about anything disolvable. Acetone will strip off touchup paint that has been dried for years right down to the OE paint. Handy for fixing blobs, or bad jobs, but you have to be careful if you use solvents around touched up areas. OEM Porsche & BMW touch up comes with base color and clear coat in separate tubes.
