I made a single 10" in that same location (behind the rear seat) but the sub is upward facing the windshield. Not stealth at all. This box is more of a custom look.

Also, if you do fiberglass box, they will weight less than 10lbs for the box alone vs wooden box which can triple the weight.
Hmmmm

here's what my sales guy said at benchmark:

It will be a sealed enclosure with the woofers down firing that will be completely covered with radiused top. It will be nice and clean but, still maintain the integrity of your car.

I am assuming you are reusing the factory Bose subwoofer enclosure and building to that? If that is the case then I believe 6" is the biggest you can go with the subwoofer facing down.

That is a very impressive and sleek looking enclosure. But I still have a hard time believing 6" will play that well for the low notes. Then again, I came from a car with a 15" sub setup in my m3.

I am finishing up making my own custom fiberglass sub that fits in one of the rear seats, and holds 1 MTX 7510-44Sub or Above....These are massive 10" subs if you know them...I will post pics

I will be more then happy to assist anyone else who wants to make one.

Or for me to make one for you(at a price)

Amongst the many other variables, _one_ factor in powerful bass reproduction is the total driver surface area. Here are some numbers:

2 8" subs == 100.5 sq in
4 6" subs == 113.1 sq in
1 12" sub == 113.1 sq in
3 8" subs == 150.8 sq in
1 15" sub == 176.7 sq in

(There are many home-audiophilie speakers that are flat to 20Hz, using small drivers... Note, JBLs are not those. Many popular JBL sub drivers tend to produce resonant peaks at around 50Hz - no matter what the enclosure - that make drums kick hard.)

Great info.

Wouldn't another variable in powerful bass reproduction is the Xmax?

Hey all.. Just bought my girl (1999 996) about 4 weeks ago. And really loving my music and being a DIYer, I had a vision. I have seen some ideas on this topic but I just didnt like the standard 4-6", considered 3 - 8" square kicker solobarics but came up with this instead.. I decided to go with 2 - 12" shallow mount pioneers. I am currently finishing up the structural portion of the box, which is all fiberglass. The box takes up ALL of the back hatch area behind the seats but it does not stuck up above the seats or window. I think this is pretty slick. I consider this to be low key, many might disagree.

Just wanted to add to this, I dont have a camera anymore, the GF took it when she moved out so these were taken with my lousy sidekick camera. I wanted what everone else here wanted: something stealth, doesnt take up space, and look clean and sound good. I think i did that with this system.

any questions, feel free to ask. box is wrapped in suede to match all the suede in the car. back of the box has red LED's that change color behind my car crew's name, also has red LED on the front of the box and on the plexi that sits on the top of the rear seats. on the amp, red LED's accent at night with the amp mounted "floating" in the middle of the hatch with all wires running through the middle of the hidden base.
