I decided to go with 2 - 12" shallow mount pioneers. I am currently finishing up the structural portion of the box, which is all fiberglass. The box takes up ALL of the back hatch area behind the seats but it does not stuck up above the seats or window. I think this is pretty slick. I consider this to be low key, many might disagree.
I know this is an old thread but do you have pics of the finished product? JL and Alpine now both have shallow mount subs, and I think a single 12" on the rear deck would be plenty for most people. I am thinking about doing this in the near future. If anyone has done this and has opinions/pics/etc. please post.

Not sure they would live to see tomorrow after being punished by Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Steel Pulse...

Just did a box w'two 8" subs

Just did a stereo in my 03 Targa. Made the sealed box myself. Turned out and sounds great. I finished it by covering it with carpet to match the car.

Looks like a perfect solution and similar to what I want to do. I think I'll probably make my box taller- almost up to the top of the seats, for more air volume. What size subs are those?

Speaking of air volume; how do you calculate the proper box volume for a subwoofer?

Those are 8" subs. I didnt really calculate it. I just guessed from seeing other set ups just like this one. I did see on one of these threads how to calculate it out.

(There are many home-audiophilie speakers that are flat to 20Hz, using small drivers... Note, JBLs are not those. Many popular JBL sub drivers tend to produce resonant peaks at around 50Hz - no matter what the enclosure - that make drums kick hard.)
