Custom Sub Enclosure for 996

All,

Not sure if someone has done this in the past but I am new to the Porsche world. I recently bought a 2003 911 Cab and was extremely frustrated by the sound quality. Especially the sub response. I had the factory Bose setup with the plactic sub enclosure on the right side of the center console. A factory 4X6 sub.....are you kidding me? Well, I built an enclosure in the front section on the passenger footwell, and it sounded good, but took up too much space. Tried some boxes in the rear seat area, did not sound good. Well I finally modified the factory enclosure, put in a 10" sub, and it sounds really good! You loose no leg room and it looks totally factory. I will try and get some pics up soon. I own a car stereo business in Portland, OR and if there is anyone out there who wants us to make you one just drop me an email. You can visit our website: www.elite-caraudio.com

stupid commercial. and the fact that you recommend adding a sub to the atrocious factory sound system and say it's great ...is well... asinine

Thank you the great feedback!

All we used is the basic form of the enclosure. The front was re-built with MDF and fiberglass, airspace was expanded and a 10" sub was added. I replaced all the speakers in the car and added (2) Zapco amplifiers. For that car, the space given, the sub sounds great. There is no loss of leg room and given what we had t work with I think its looks and sounds really good. I will post some pics this weekend.......late. Again, thanks for your feedback (without even seeing it)! Jeez.

I've got a 10" Critical Mass sub and fiberglass enclosure in the passenger footwell. A single 500/5 JL Audio amp drives the entire system. It hits clean and hard with minimal legroom lost.

no no no no man i'm not trying to be an arsehole for the sake of sounding like one.

the dude's post was ridiculous and it's obviously violating the whole must be a sponsor to post ads stuff. the mods just haven't caught it yet but like i really care as that's not my job.

the dude was pretty non-descriptive about the setup, still no pics... i take a particular interest in this because i'm about to drop $2K for a 4 6" JBL something enclosure behind the rear seats + apline pdx driving it all and want to know if this is a good deal or not based on what others are doing... but the shop i go to is known to do great, reptuable (you pay for the service/quality) work but then i'm so unfamiliar with sound systems that.. i feel like sometimes i might be gettin' taken for a ride

4 6"? why not go with 2 or 3 8"? I don't think the 6" can play the low notes well unless it is ported in a massive size box. I had a pair of 8" and it didnt play low enough so I went with a single 10". Much happier now.

i was assuming it's cuz for fitment... behind the rear seats which is going to be pretty stealth... factory style. thoughts?

You can fit 2 or possibly 3 8" behind the rear seats and make it factory style like the Bose but with the subs facing up. I had made a fiberglass box for 2 8" in the past for 2 8s and it fits perfectly behind the rear seats.

I made a single 10" in that same location (behind the rear seat) but the sub is upward facing the windshield. Not stealth at all. This box is more of a custom look.

Also, if you do fiberglass box, they will weight less than 10lbs for the box alone vs wooden box which can triple the weight.
