we had K&N installed on our 996 a couple of days ago and we've already thrown a check engine light. they think it's probably the mass airflow sensor. not good. >=( it goes in on the 19th.

after resetting the car the light went off but then came back on again. we'll see what they say. maybe it just needs to be cleaned off really well. hopefully that's all that it is.

^^sound is great! we have a fabspeed muffler bypass installed as well, so the combo together is music to my ears! no noticable HP diff. we'll see what they say. i hope it all works out. i've heard both + and - about K&N and i read about it before we installed it. i'll just X my fingers and hope it's nothing big and we can continue to use it.

I bought one used and the PO used a different filter element that was dry. You might want to check that. Also if shop put it on maybe they didn't blow off the k&n filter with some air first. or used a compressor that had too much compressor oil in it.

K&N instructions specifically say NOT to use compressed air on the filter media.

Did they disconnect the battery for the recommended 2 hours to reset the ECU? Some of the guys on the other boards wrapped thier filters in a towel/ paper towels overnight prior to the install to remove any excess oil from the filters and cleaned their MAFs prior to the install as well. Also, make sure the MAF Sensor is positioned correctly as well fig 26a http://www.kandn.com/instructions/63-7000_inst.pdf . I am not sure how this effects the the pre-2001 cars since they MAFs were redesigned later.

HC,

thanks for the info! when they disconnected that battery they then recommected it immediately. they didn't give it more than 10 mins.

it was actually a body shop that installed it for us since the car was in having something else done. it's going to a performance shop to have some recaro seats installed and while it's there they are going to see what is going on the the CAI. i should have gone to them for the install to begin with i guess. oh well....live and learn. they specialize in body work, not modifications. i should have known better. i think a peformance shop would have checked things out a bit more upon the install and after.

i'll let you guys know what they say when it comes back.

thanks for your advice everyone. i appreciate it!

The ECU reset corrects the air intake flow, settings and readings. Also wrap the filter to remove any excess oil and clean the MAF as suggested. You and the hubby could knock this out this afternoon and be rolling by this evening

Congratulations! You made the right choice choosing to install EVOMS cold air intake system. Along with your Fabspeed mufflers the note you produce will be pleasing to your ear. You just don't want it to be as loud as the Ferrari and Lamborghini groups that are sounding off around my area this weekend. Porsche still has a better sound.

Make sure you have te radio code in case it needs to be re-entered once the battery is disconnected for the couple of hours.
