B&M SSK a good mod

I just finished installing a B&M SSK. IMHO this is a "must have". The shifting feel improves by a significant amount--more positive and, of course, less travel. The install took less than two hours including installing the EVOM linkage.

I'm not sure what difference the new linkage makes, but the old linkage was pretty torn up and had some end play, so from a maintentance perspective, it makes sense to do it as long as you're into it already.

I know a lot of guys have already done this, but I thought I'd throw in on this for anyone considering it.

Thanks to the guys at Bumperplugs for a good price on this stuff!

After suspension changes - the 2nd best mod, especially if it is installed correctly.

Instructions in the box--or you can get them here: http://www.bmracing.com/bmracing/ins...ruction/67.pdf

I did not find the install particularly challenging.

it seems that the only folks that complain about this mod are the ones that are particular challenged with the install...

what I found to be the most important thing regarding the install is this:
before removing the cables from the original Porsche sloppy shift kit, mark the cables with a marker on both cables lined up directly next to each other. (use a permanent marker or wire tie/twist tie). This will tell you the exact cable placement in the B&M SSK. If you move these cables during or after the removal of the stock SK w/o marking the cables, you will have issues until you get these cables properly aligned back up. Popping out of gear, Hard to get into gear and very notchy shifting will be the symptoms of improperly aligned cables

The hardest thing for me was figuring out how to get the shift boot off. Step one of the instructions calls for the use of a hex key. I felt around for about half an hour trying to figure out where the set screw was. then I just grabbed the thing and pulled up--off it came!

You're right about the cable alignment. When you add in a new shift linkage it makes measuring and marking even more important. I got the cables in in the right spot and it worked great the first time. It would be a pain to try to dial it in on a trial-and-error basis.

That's the difference between 99-01 and 02+ shift boots...

My only regret was not putting a bit of loctite on the cable screw. Out for a drive and oh yes the cable slid out stranding me. I had to have my kid grab some tools and drive the 60 miles to help me out. Lession learned, loctite, small tool box for the car.
