Supra Owner Thinking About Switching Teams

Hi everyone,

I currently have a 94 Supra Turbo pushing low 500 whp on pump. Im thinking about selling it and purchasing a 996. Its much more classy and professional then the Supra. Im totally new to the Porsche relm of things, and just want to ask the newb questions regarding reliability of modded 911's. I will most likely purchase a 996 already modded as I spent way more modding the Supra myself compared to purchasing one done already.

What are common issues with the 996 modded and un-modded?
And of course who makes quality Porsche Performance upgrades?

Thanks,
Rob

I bet you are going to miss the power that your supra provided!

Common problems are with the early 996 3.4 liter which is engine failure due to the intermediate shaft.

MAF fails here and there.

Other than that, I do not know of any that is 'common'.

Dude, 3.4 blown engines are common, WTF... any hard #'s available to draw this conclusion? Or is it just something you've read on the internet....

To the OP, coming from the modded Supra world, I would get a TT instead... They've really come down in price.

Common is a relative term. When I say common, I mean that it is common compared to your average car such as a toyotal supra. My engine was replaced and my intermediate shaft bearing failed making loud knocking sound. This was how I drew that conclusion. BTW, my IMS bearing failed at 48k miles.

Former Supra owner here as well. Although I miss the power, the 996 is a better for fit for me as well. Less boy-racer, more refinement with plenty of performance.

The 996 is less reliable than my supra was, but it's not bad. Coilpacks, alternator, control arms...I'd say those are the common failures (other than RMS leaks).

If you can afford a TT, that would get you the best of both worlds.

Ya sorry guys just noticed the other part of the forum for the TT's. I would be hard pressed to sell the Supra for something with way less power. A modded TT is deffinately what I would be looking for. Is a forum mod able to move threads from one place to another?
