Homelink Rear View Mirror ??
Homelink Rear View Mirror ??
My rear view mirror in my 2004 996 C2 Cab needs to be replaced. Before I slap another OEM mirror in there, I wanted to investigate getting a Homelink mirror put in it's place. Has anyone done this, and if so, how hard was the wiring install? I assume it's a relatively simply tie into the overhead lighting? Any specific mirror you used?
All I am needing are garage door buttons .. don't especially care about autodimming, etc.
Thoughts? Experiences?
Thanks
Rob

I installed my remote using the Porsche garage door switch that fits in one of the blank switch positions in the horse shoe. You can buy them on ebay for about $100 with a wiring harness. or about $55 without. I am considering a new rearview mirror with a built in Radar detector you may want to check them out instead.

Can you install this in a car that had a standard mirror? I want one with the homelink but my car didn't come with it.
I plan to do this too and ebay will be my source. I wired a radar to the area around my mirror, so adding it should be a snap.

The valentine 1 display mirrors are pretty neat too

I just spoke with a window specialist in my area that knew quite a bit about Porsche windshields (and we was referred to me by the local dealer).
I told him of my plans to remove the factory rear view mount and replace it with a tombstone mount for the HomeLink mirror. He said that from his 20+ years of experience, that based on the micro torch approach of removing fatory mountings (heat reduces bonding) that there is a higher chance of cracking the windshield upon removal .. possible, but risky. At to boot, replacement Porsche windshields come with the factor rear view mount so you're back to square one.
So, I'm going to keep my OEM mirror and move to plan B to instdall a DIY homelink solution.
Thanks all for your comments!

I do have it.
I was waiting for Rob's answer first before offering to anyone else.
It's a great unit but may be a challenge in some Porsche's.
However, if you have had a windshield replaced you know that has to come off first. Si I have to believe there is a set screw on the OEM piece to remove it.
Check with an auto glass replacer.
