Hey guys...
Just got myself a 996 ('99) C2. Manual. Coupe.
Always been dreaming about owning a porsche and just got one.

My question to you guys is: Do you guys rev high to start to go to 60 mph mark with shortest time?
I tried to start with revs under 1500 and never managed to get a "powerful" start. I notice that it goes faster in the 2nd gear.
But looking through the manual, their graphs show starting at 2500 rpms. Is that how high rpms are at start?
And which gear would be by the time you hit 60 mph?


I used to have a manual Maxima many years ago and used to get it to start with lower rpms with reasonable results.

Any advice would be appreciated...

 

Redline the car in each gear BOSS, and you will find out... lol.

btw....just an idea, but you might consider taking some DE or DS courses. they can give you all kinds of helpful info about your car and how to drive it.

You could drive it like my brother in law drove his 996tt. Peg the redline in each gear and get caught doing 130 in a 25mph zone. JK. I wouldn't expect anyone to drive like that. But, unfortunately he did and he has lo license as of right now. If your not sure on what is the best way to drive your new baby, then just try it in a few different ways. Rev high, rev low, depends on if your a lead foot or not.

 

I think the OP is just looking for best 1st gear launch technique and that his starts are generally kind of soft. I agree that attending DE or DS events and talking 1st-hand with experienced drivers would be very helpful.

...Or.. you could just peg redline, drop the clutch and see what happens... (JK)

 

personally, i find that my shifting habits tend change after a mod. Add an exhaust.. rev a little higher. Intake..more. Valentine.. even more. I am pretty sure I shifted at higher revs after DIYing the hidden garage door opener... certain it ran much quicker. Too much fun.

I agree - he is looking for the optimal rev for low et times. In my Vette I was worried about those things but in the Porsche it is more about balance and power application. I think that is why folks are misreading his post.

Before you flog the new (to you) 996, read a few of the engine repair and rebuild threads. The drive it like you stole it advice is great if you have a large pocket of disposable cash. . But I tend to be a bit conservative. I Never drag launch my 996.

Yeah I think OP talking about first gear launch. Personally I never look at tach for those. I just go by feeling and sound. You can tell when the engine likes where it is. I guess for me it comes from years of standards in both cars and bikes. With many different engine configs. Tach for me becomes important at 5500. Then I pay attention. Of course the rev limiter comes into to play on up shifts.

 

Interestingly, looking at the new 997.2 with PDK and launch control, the rpm's are held at about 6k or so, then 1st engages for a hard launch.

 

Always remember to drive gently untill the engine is hot (80´Celsius). By the way, do you guys have fahrenheit thermometers on your Porsches in U.S.?
