exhaust upgrade experiences/opinions please..
Your link is a stock exhaust and is NOT a PSE.
From my experience, GHL is more conservative soundwise than PSE. GHL is quiet when driving the car lightly but when in WOT it can get loud and raspy. PSE definetly have more sound when cruising in low RPMs but not as loud when WOT. I have had personal experience with both exhaust on my car.
Note: I do have GHL headers so that may change my sound vs. stock header.

I have Tubis on my car and also was very close to PSEs. It was a tossup, and the person I was buying from gave me choice of either...I'm totally happy with it, but the PSEs sound really mean as well. I would not have installed any electronics with the PSE had I gone that route.
But used or not, from what I've read on rennlist and 6speed, it has to be either PSE or Tubi. Many that have gotten Fabspeed have also been satisfied, but I know of a few that went further on to PSE or Tubi. Don't settle if you can help it...if you can't afford to buy one new, wait for a good used one. They come around from time to time.

Here are some recent postes on the topic:
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-fabspeed.html. I'm sure you'll find more if you search. I went with Fabspeed on my cab and I'm very happy. You can buy directly from Fabspeed and install the mufflers yourself--takes about two hours as long as you buy new clamps for the tips.

For the 996 99-04 Fabspeed only has one muffler. This muffler is pretty mild in sound when used with stock cats. Made form T304 stainless steel and stainless steel wool packing. The muffler retails for $1095.00 for the set and $1195.00 with tips. (please specify year when ordering the tips are different sizes for different years)
OP, if you're looking for just sound not performance, you might want to do a search of just the 3.6L/3.4L muffler hack depending MY of your 996. The thread was heavily discussed on rennlist forum. Many people whos done it seem content on that. $75-300 range to get the job done. Good luck

I would humbly suggest Agency Power, they are tame inside the cabin and have a very nice tone outside. Good mellow upgrade, and won't break the bank. I had gotten quite a few compliments on the exhaust tone when I had them on my 996.
Now, if you want to be more daring my #1 choice is the AfterHours pipes, because they shed alot of weight, the sound is wicked and it does add to your performance. Not only that, they are priced well lower than they should be considering the engineering and workmanship.
But, since your primary concern is no interior noise they might not suit you. More for guys who want their pcar to really sound like a pcar
