Bilstein PSS9 clunking sound problem
Bilstein PSS9 clunking sound problem
Hi, I have a C4S and recently (500 miles ago) had West End Alignment install a new set of PSS9s. My problem that I have is when traveling slowly (parking lot speeds) over bumps or dips I hear a clanking noise coming from the right front coilover. It doesn't happen all the time. When stopped, I repeatedly pushed down the front end of the car and it appears that the small "helper" spring of the coilover is making the noise. I applied a fiml coat of grease on this spring, as well as WD-40 but both do not rid the noise. Is anyone experiencing this and what was your remedy? Thanks.
I'll check it out further. Thanks.
Same kind of problem having here!!!
I have also just recently (like 800km) ago installed the Pss9, only difference with you is that mine is a 996C2, right front sounding when slow speed passing bump!
plz keep me update!
Thx!!

Yea mine does it also - and I have swapped out to H&R swaybars
I have checked all links, steering linkage etc...it is not any of this. I think it is a bump stop issue and a speed bump or dip causes the top of the strut to bump/or the mounting point. I have not seen any damage or anything negative caused by this...it is unnerving and irritating.

I'm nearly certain that the clanking/clunking sound is coming from the smaller spring. But if it is in compression why the movement and sound? I'll look into it further later this week with a wll informed Porsche friend/mechanic. Here's a recent pic of my ride...
Check your
- bearing washer
- top nut torque
- seating of springs
Might have to add something (washer) to where the spring seat meets the upper housing.
Google PSS9's and noise...every car forum has threads on it.
If your installer is any good they can figure it out.
Came across these items that may help the helper and main spring rotate easier (thrust sheets):

Additionally, I sprayed some motorcycle chain lube on areas of the springs that come in contact with metal, mainly the tops and bottoms of both the main and helper springs. Seemed to do the trick though I didn't drive it far since it takes awhile for the chain lube to become tacky.
Thanks for the responses.

What sway bar/links do you have in the front? A problem that sometimes occurs is noise from the sway bar/Tarett link combo.
