Convertible top stopped working today. What should I be checking?

Luckily it failed with the top up

When I hit the button, the windows go down a few inches and then nothing else happens.

Any suggestions for what I should be checking first?

I do have the smart top and smart remote.

I'm not even sure where to begin on this one. I haven't heard of anyone's 996 top mechanism failing before.

I had mine fail because the 2 "wings" that fold up and down that are directly to the side of the popout roll bars were stuck...

I like we're you're going with this... I could start a whole new trend. Maybe just wear goggles and ***-less chaps with suspenders

there are three 10mm bolts that hold that peice in place...removed them and reinstalled them..allowing me to adjust the mounting place on the bracket that holds it...PM me if you have questions....the 2 "wings" are the first peices to move before the top goes....

I have a 2000 996 with a similar problem but mine stops working from the down to up position. The rear piece lifts up and then stops in that position. I can usually get it to work by sitting there for 5 minutes pressing the switch on and off. I have had it in 3 times for the same problem and everytime I get charged for what is presumably the issue but then boom, stops working.

My top recently stopped working as well it would open half way then stopped moving but the motor made a high pitch winding noise. After doing some searching on renntech.org i found out that the problem was the car was low on hydrolic fluid. It's a very very easy fix i got the fluid from porsche it was under $30.

Here is a link to a great step by step process that i followed....

Yea but i would just sign up it's free just like this site this way you can view all the photo's. If they didnt take the top apart then they didnt check the fluid level. the fluid level can only be checked when u take sme things apart sign up for renntech so you can view all the helpfull photo's
