I am Jeph, I need a C4S

Hello all. I am Jeph, a lurker no more on 6speedonline.com. Get ready for my intro and questions.

I'm from the world of Boxster and I would like to get something bigger. A Carrera is the way for me to go (because only recently have I discovered a BMW will never be a Porsche). I like 996s so much, I've converted half my Boxster into one:

http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/936033579.html

So that's what I'm parting with to join the 911 family.

I've pretty much decided on the C4S. This is mainly because of a) AWD and b) looks.

My reasoning for AWD is not because of weather, but rather because I feel it's safer than RWD due to the engine being in the rear. Is that logic that I have made up myself, or is there any truth to that? Basically, is an AWD Carrera just as likely to bite me as a RWD?

Next question, does the exhaust note on a 3.6 change at a certain speed or RPM? On a recent test drive, I could have sworn I noticed a change in the sound of the exhaust note around 20mph. It when from quite grumbly to considerably quieter. Am I imagining that, or is that something Carreras do, or is something terribly wrong with the car I drove?

Anyway, I look forward to your feedback, and I'm excited to post on this forum.

Feel free to come over and drive my non awd 996 anytime. Living in Dallas having a 4s isn't really needed imho - you'll be fine in the rwd 996

Do you have a 3.4 or 3.6?

My AWD question is more about handling a rear engine car as opposed to how it handles in certain weather.

After reading a lot of the debate on this board, I may have to consider a non 4S.

If it has a PSE, I think it has a loud cut off from around 2k to 4k rpm.... but you can unplug the cutoff in the engine compartment and leave it on all the time.

Good Luck on the upgrade...

By the way, the GHL or FabSpeed set up is a great exhaust to go with since it doesn't drone on you the way some others might.

If you turn of PSM, it will bite you. The 4S doesn't save me nearly as much as I thought it would (mind you, I'm not complaining.)

That sounds normal. I noticed the same thing about my C4S. When I watched the Top Gear episode on the difference between the C2, C4S, and TT, Clarkison made a comment how the C4S sounded best below 30mph--and I laughed. I thought the same thing.

From my experience, between 30 and 80mph, the car is too quiet. (after 80 and past130mph+ it is quite sexy. I say 130 because that's the fastest my track lets me get to.)

Thanks! I have put a lot of work into it, more than one might actually notice. I don't feel bad about leaving it for a newer and bigger Porsche. Any other car just wouldn't feel right.

So in the world of 3.6s, do the majority of enthusiasts like the 4S over the RWD?

Good luck with your search. I too am coming from a boxster and am looking for a Carrera. At one ponit I wanted a C4S due to the looks. You can't deny the sexiness of that car. But for my needs, which will be a daily driver, I'm going to stay with a Carrera.

Let us know how the search goes.

Thanks. I'll keep you posted.

Why does a Carrera make a better daily driver than a C4S?

Jeph,

I think I met you a couple of years ago at a BMW meet. Your friend had a Titanium Silver M3 SMG w/ M6 rep wheels.

Anyway, I bought a C4S because of the Turbo look (widebody, front end) and full leather interior. I was actually torn between the C4S and 40th Anniversary (Turbo front end, full leather interior, 345hp, less weight), but it's a little hard to find low-mileage CPO example (locally, at least). Ultimately, I decided on C4S because it was going to be a fair weather boulevard cruiser and garage queen so squeezing the last drop of performance was not important to me.

If you're interested in a 40th anniversary, there's a member on rennlist.com trying to sell his in LA; the car was purchased new by him from Park Place Porsche when he lived iin Dallas.

Good luck.

///Michael

Yeah! That's my room mate Ken. (He's on the verge of dumping his M3 [at Carmax] for cheap!) Was this you blending in with the Bimmer crowd?

If so, I let me just say how impressed I was with this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...83581448&hl=en

You're one of the reasons I want a C4S. Congratulations!
