Cool Rear Main Seal #2

Has anybody experienced this:

Searching for a good parking space and suddenly a noise like a low flying helicopter, so I open the door for a better listen and realize it's coming from under my car!
Shut the engine off right away, wait 30 seconds and restart, and the noise is gone.
Rear main seal # 2 is leaking.
Now it's on the lift at the dealer and the trans is out. Engine coming out, to replace the 'oil separator'. Service manager says this is the new procedure for RMS. The separator can produce back pressure which blows the seal. My crank shaft passes the concentricity test with flying colors.

???

wow that's strange. Ask them to heat cycle it before they put it back together. Hoehn down here did that for me and fine. I also botched my oil pan so I had to get the new updated one also guh. Oh well, the funny thing is from the service records this make luck # 5 rms for the car to date!

Why dont I see any threads about RMS leaks in the Turbo or GT3 sections... is this something that solely effects the regular Carreras, and if so, can someone tell me why we are not effective.

Thanks

Those cars use differnt engines that are not prone to this. Basically the N/A 996 Block is a M96 engine design. The Turbo is a 993 block with 996 heads. The GT3 is a Turbo without the Turbochargers. The RMS problems are because of the M96 engine block. Since the Turbo and GT3 do not have a M96 block...It does not have the same issues.

Out of the six RMS leaks and the two Intermediate shaft leaks I've had, I never had any indication of a problem other than the oil spot beneath the car. Wow...this sounds serious...I am a bit miffed at understanding that more isn't happening here. I have heard that they are replacing the oil separators now in the process...but this sounds different. Did they say what the noise was caused by? Was it the "back pressure" from a faulty separator?

It sounds like they did measure...did you happen to find out where you were?

Hi RobynC,
I didn't see them measure it but the Mgr assured me that the shaft is fine. Have you ever seen yours measured? He said if it was outside the specs, he would gladly change the engine for me.
As for the noise, I'm planning on speaking to the factory tech rep Monday.
6 times for you! Do you still have your original engine?

My Service Mgr has always been very open to telling me what's going on with my car, partly because I am interested in learning. But, they have always told me where I am on the concentricity scale. .30 is the tolerance and with my car, she had two RMS leaks at .27....they opted to change it out at that point. The other four were with a previous Boxster. I went through three engines on that car and I'm on the second in the 996. Knock on wood, she is holding, but I have to say...I'm not holding my breath.

Cool

Has anyone had their air/oil separator replaced?

Did they remove your engine to do it?

Mine was removed!

I just got a call back from the SE Porsche tech guy and he said the engine doesn't need to be removed for that repair!!

Now the car doesn't shift like it used to, so I'm meeting him.

Ciao

My crank runnout is "less than 0.01mm."
