there's one in every crowd. makes my asking price of $17k with a damaged motor sound pretty reasonable. thanks for the laugh.

Isn't it possible to upgrade to a newer motor yet? like 3.6 or 3.8. I remember someone talked about a 4.0 from some shop in the Midwest. Why not just upgrade if not too expensive?

Yeah, but all it takes is one person who really wants it. I sold my 04 GT3 with 10,000 miles in December for more than $80,000. The guy could have found a similar one for less than $65,000, but, he either did not know that or didn't care.

I'm gonna stay off my phone today in case someone calls me with an offer.

yep. here is what i've found thus far for e-throttle motor upgrades. my 3.4 is a mech throttle which requires some finesse to change over to an e throttle car.
  1. Raby a 3.6 rebuild/upgrade that claims to have cured all the ailments of the 3.4 (but he wont say what they are yet) and provide another 20% power, if i recall correctly.
  2. Fabian can do the 3.6 or 3.8 upgrade with a mech throttle
  3. Dave White Racing can also do #2

996's are definitely crap: http://www.devwebsphere.com/porsche/...ne_failed.html

  1. Raby quoted $17k for a 3.6 rebuild/upgrade that claims to have cured all the ailments of the 3.4 (but he wont say what they are yet) and provide another 20% power, if i recall correctly.
  2. Fabian quoted $13k for a 3.6 or approx $8k plus motor for a 3.8
  3. Dave White Racing quoted $8k + motor for a 3.6 intallation.

Only 1 996 had a mechanical throttle and that was the 99 C2. All other 3.4 engines had E-gas.

Ok, so, just for my own information for sometime in the future, since I have a 99 C4, and thus has E-gas (right?) I can upgrade to a 3.8 engine for how much? And who does the work?

I will PM you to keep the shops' rates confidential. But it sounds like Fabian Roock is the man for this sort of thing. Dave White racing (Carlos) also sounds very knowledgeable on the matter. he converted his Boxster to a 3.6.
