questions about a reman engine

Im looking at a 02 996 c2 with 70k miles on it. The engine was replaced less then 1k miles ago. I am waiting for a call back from the service rep to get more info about what happened and whether the engine was actually remanufactured or new. The owner had an after market warranty that paid for the new engine and got the 24 month Porsche warranty.

Does anyone have any experience with this 24 month warranty? what excatly does it cover? I mean, what come attached to the engine in the "crate"? ac compressor? alternator? etc and is all that covered?

From reading the older posts on the forum, it looks like the most common failure that would lead to a new engine is IMS failure. Was the root cause of this found and corrected? I dont want to worry about this happening again in 10k-20k miles...

any other thoughts/suggestions/word of wizdom regarding getting a semi-high mile pcar with a new engine?

thanks

A reman engine is a rebuilt engine, sometimes a returned engine, sometimes on taken off the line due to issues and then rebuilt. A new engine is just that, fresh of the line. New engines are close to twice what a reman engine is. The reman engines come with just about everything on them and have a full warranty for 24 months, unlimited miles. They also have alot of updates, particularly for the 3.4's. The 3.6's already had some of the updates. Most peoples think a reman engine is an advantage. In the case of this car only 1,000 miles as oppsed to 70,000 is a big difference.

Make sure the warranty is transferable (it should be) and still have a PPI.

what he said

The % of failure from a reman 3.4 is MUCH MUCH less. You're making a good decision on this purchase. Unfortuatly the "standard" 3.4 is a ticking time bomb. The reman engine has the improved and larger IMS (which Porsche says never was a problem in the first place) which has led to far less failures.

this,as you know is a 3.6 which self destructed anyhow. Im guessing its due to the fact it was an early 02 and didnt get all the updates.

finally got to talk to the service adviser... the engine is definitely a remanufactured one - not new. The engine came bare and all the bolt on accessories were moved from the older engine to the newer one and are not covered by the 24 months warranty.

Porsche covered replacement of my 3.6 engine. Crank shaft was offcenter by 0.17mm. New engine is a 997 engine block with a thicker shaft Here are the pics of the oil leak and the new engine.

Sounds like the exterior parts, h2o pump, air cond, alt, etc are not covered. Thats the wear and tear stuff. Tha big ticket item the block and heads are. Sounds like a good deal.

There's a button in the driver's footwell attached to the fuse panel.

On a Porsche Pactory Reman - everything is new except the block. Check some of my posts and see pics of a Porsche reman 3.4 I ordered for my 99 996 - every nut and bold was new - the alumnimum was shinny as new. Everything excpet the A/C, A/F Resevoir and the clutch were on the motor. I was told by the dealer that everything was covered for 2 years or 12,000 miles. This was 18 mos. ago so things may have changed. I would speak directly to the dealer and get the info from the horses mouth. Porsceh remans are GREAT! All new/reman motors from Porsche have the upgraded RMS. Additionally I was told the cylinder sleeves are pressed in differently now which reduces the chance of D-chunking. If it came from the factory, then you got a great car. Good luck.

PS - I still installed a Brey Krause oil pan kit and the third radiator on that and my new '02 3.6 - if you track it's cheap insurance.
