new (to me) 02 C4S
new (to me) 02 C4S
Have posted on Rennlist, but thought I would post here as well for this community (02 C4S with 46M miles) first p-car -- came from previous M-B background (current DD is an early AMG car). Car is Arctic Silver with black interior, and still has new leather smell.
Did a full PPI at local dealer ($520) with paint gauge, compression and leakdown. Only issues noted were slight noise from idle rollers for serpentine belt (no immediate need to fix -- estimate $440 to replace) and recommendation to flush and renew brake fluid. I had these items and an oil change done by the dealer about 10 days after I bought the car (total $790).
Compression values were 260 - 268 psi [3 at 260 psi, 2 at 265 psi and 1 at 268 psi] (vs specs of 265 psi plus or minus 10 psi); leakdown was 0 - 3% [1 of 0%, 4 of 2% and 1 of 3%] (vs specs of 0 - 8%).
Options included PCM with navigation, advanced technic package (litronic lights with washers, 6-CD changer and 12-speaker upgraded Bose stereo), supple leather, heated seats, sunroof, self-dim mirrors and rain sensor, footwell lighting and full dark wood (3-spoke steering wheel, shift ****, emergency brake, center console, instrument surround, door pulls and door pocket covers), as well as C4S items such as 4WD, wide body, on-board computer, full leather, PSM, etc.
Prior dealer service records showed regular maintenance (flushing and renewal of fluids and 4-year airbag maintenance) and dealer-installed short-throw shifter ($700), PSS9 suspension ($3,800), GT3 adjustable sway bars with AP adjustable links ($1,200) and suspension adjustment, corner balance and alignment to GT3 RS specs ($350), as well as RMS replacement and coolant hose replacement. The service records also show a tech inspection for DE event and a tech inspection for track.
The car also has Vosstek aluminum pedals and the inspecting dealer thinks that it has an stronger after-market clutch, given the stiffness and pedal effort required for the clutch (the clutch on the Boxster loaner that I had while they were doing the PPI work seemed almost effortless/flimsy as did the shifter though the shifter throw was markedly longer).
The seller was asking $35.75M and I countered with $32M (based on what real cash buyers in this market were thinking offers should be at pricing which would hold up 2 - 3 months from now) we settled on $32.5M, which I think is a fair price even in this unsettled market, particular given the options and extras. All-in cost with PPI, fixing the PPI items and oil change is thus $33.8M for a completely no-issues 02 C4S.
I particularly wanted the full wood (appreciating that others may prefer carbon fiber or plain leather), supple leather and the suspension/shifter. Arctic Silver happened to be my top color choice, but would have preferred lighter gray interior to contrast with dark wood, tho black is OK. Would have preferred adaptable sports seats, but comfort seats are OK.
Had toyed with idea of getting a 996 GT2 or turbo, but figured that I would probably kill myself (esp with GT2), so C4S seemed best fit. Happy with car and handling only issue is suspension (which is on lowest setting) requires sideways crab approach to curbs, speed bumps, etc. Ride is rough in city, but fine on good roads.
Hope this is not too much detail, but thought some may find it of interest.

M, of course, means thousands [Roman numeral] -- MM means million [thousand thousand] -- common financial shorthand!
32.5 million should help shore up the sagging sales prices for the rest of us
.
Soulds like you got a great ride at a good price. Get out and enjoy it.

All the mods had been done by the second owner, who was a PCA member. The dealer records did not cover the last 10,000 miles when out of warranty, so the clutch was likely done then by an independent. Seller did not have records other than those he obtained from dealers, thus my doing the full (and expensive) PPI -- seller said he also had his CarMax folks carefully go over the car before he bought it.
I don't have any idea about the airbag maintenance -- it just showed up on the dealer records (happy to have any decoding explanation):

Carmax doesn't know Jack about Volvo's let alone Porsche's. I bought a Volvo from them 2 months ago and it took them 4 tries to get some simple things fixed for me. Anyway, regardless, the 4S is a great car. I also have one and live in the Northern VA area. Looking forward to meeting you at one of the future meets. $520 is a little steep for a PPI (I think I paid $265 a couple years ago to HBL to look at one car for me). Enjoy the car in good health!!!!

Joking aside, great deal! Sound like you got a great car. Congrats!
