Test drove a 07' 997----My Thoughts
996 is lighter*
+1
With regards to a base 997, the difference is not really that pronounced. Drive a 997.1 S and you will think a different story. Don't get me wrong, I love the rawness of the 99 and the mechanical connection that you have driving it but, the 997S are a whole different ball game.
Better seating position in the car. PASM which is a nice blend between street comfort (on soft) and really nice for aggressive driving (sport setting). Interior is nicer, the power is pronounced compared to our 300-325 hp. And easier to drive at speed (to some this is a plus, to others a negative, you decide)
Downsides to the 997 in general, less connected feeling, more weight, and no LSD (OK, most 996's didn't have them either but mine did). Also the cost.
Aesthetics aside, there is a compelling argument for the 996 as it is one of the best performance bargains out there right now. Can you make a 996 every but as good or fun as the 997 and still be under the cost of said 997. Sure.
997.2- Is a whole different ball of wax entirely. More power, better handling, LSD and an engine that promises to have addressed all of the M96 issues.
Me personally, am going to wait for a good 996 GT3 or 997 GT3 as my next step up.

Good read.... agreed that the base 997 is not much of a performance diff that the 996.... modded to your liking and would still be way under the price of the 997.
As Bruce mention, value wise, it is what it is... but for a toy, the 996 is the better value.
Thats where Im headed... I would take a 6gt3 over the 997S anyday.

I have spent a lot of time in both my 996 (factory) and my friends 997 (19" t3 wheels), both C2. The only thing I found I like better about my 996 is the clutch feel. And thats just my personal taste and could really just be the wear and mileage difference from mine to his. Otherwise, I think 997 is improved in several places.
996 or 997, I ve had both ,,
Its refreshing to see someone who is enamored with their car regardless of model.
good positive post.
I loved my 2003 996 cab, it was a great all around car.

As us 996 owners get ready to jump off the bridge due to the drop in prices, have you noticed all the others, 997's, turbo's and other models are falling too.
Me, I'm keeping mine, I enjoy it, have NO other model envy and best of all it's paid for.

paid for...

I'd still bet that my 94 993 weighed in at under 2900#s but it and the paperwork are long gone, so I'd probably lose here also.
Yes, Ducati already zinged me on this and I stand corrected
; I really apologize, especially because I get so pissed at all the BS and misinformation that's passed along as "fact" on so many forums, and specifically this one.

I liked it, I liked the 996, the 997.1, and I wish I had a 997.2

you had a 94 993?.... or 95?
996 lighter, and for '02+ significantly stiffer. While my 996 is also paid for, I'd drop it in a heartbeat for a 997.2, if I could comfortably afford it. In this economy, tho, that's not likely to happen for a long time. Maybe a used 2010 in 2015. My 996 will be 13 then, and I could probably justify it.
