Looking for advice on a 2001 996
As the title says, my wife + I found an 'interesting' color low milage 996 turbo on the 'bay :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...fCarsQ5fTrucks
Since the car is cross country from us, we would be buying sight unseen...Anything we should ask? Any well known problems on this model with such low milage?
Anything would be greatly appreciated!
except maybe for comments on the color

I would see if you can find someone on the east coast that is willing to stop in and take a look at it for you. You can also post a thread asking for a recommendation of a local independent mechanic that would be willing to inspect it for a reasonable fee. Small investment upfront to save you headaches later.
The 2001 Turbos' were plagued with the notorious 2nd gear 'pop-out'. In the 2002 model, that was corrected.
I would make sure the seller takes the car to Porsche for a PPI, prior to shipping or paying for the car. When the PPI is finished, make arrangements to talk w/ the Service Advisor about the car condition (the owner must give permission for this).
The color is nice on the exterior, but the interior is not so attractive IMHO.

The exterior is interesting, but the interior is horrible! Maybe carbon instead of wood would make it a little nicer on the eyes, or just gut it and go black... don't know but that's just all wrong.
What the heck are those big black things on the front bumper?!
Cheers

That is the ugliest Porsche I have ever seen! Better think 6 times before bidding on it. But, mechanically speaking, I'd be concerned that a car 8 year old, only has 15k miles on it. Probably sat in a garage a lot which is not good. Get it inspected by local P dealer.

PPI and local member check would be of great help. But if I were you I would check the car myself and see if I can tolerate this kind of interior

But in all seriousness if car checks out clean and this "interesting" color suits you, then that's all that matters.

I could never imagine anything making that puke green look any worse than it is. That wood pulled it off.
That and the sissy exterior color put aside, I would say no. Not worth the risk. Drive and PPI the p-car you buy, lots to choose from if you're patient.
Don't leave it to chance or to someone you don't even know tell you how that fugly thing is.

If you are indeed serious about a $40,000 car, a quick flight to look in person may set you back a few hundred, but would give you a first hand look. For me that color combination, I'd save the airfare and look closer to home.
If someone did get it for $30k, it would be a worth while investment if you went and dyed or replaced the interior to all black with Euro GT3 seats and tossed the wood online for some aluminum look or carbon replacements.
The exterior color isn't that bad, but it would still even be worth a respray. The exterior kinda grows on you... like a mold. haha no but seriously with the right wheels and tasteful body mods it would be ok.

Haha, though the shots are less than flattering, I like the color. The interior would have to be changed to black though. I couldnt own it because of the interior. I have bought 3 cars on ebay sight unsean and have flown out to buy 4. You can usually tell when you talk to someone if you can trust them. Order a PPI and enjoy the car
I just got around to reading this post this morning. When I checked the e-bay site, it showed the bidding had closed without reaching the Reserve.
I'm kind of conservative when it comes to big ticket purchases, so buying a $40,000 car site unseen is way beyond my comfort level.
To embellish on the suggestions made, I suggest the Porsche Club Quest program. to explore Porsche ownership options.

Good Luck.
