I posted this on Rennlist too.

Coolant leaking right below the coolant tank. I'm going to take a guess after reading all the threads on cracked coolant tanks, this may be my problem. I started smelling a faint odor of coolant but never noticed a leak until today.

Its a 2002 911 Targa with 33,900 miles. It has the long coolant tank, I guess the one that's a real pain to swap out? I can't see where its leaking from anywhere. I was under it today swapping out my mufflers too. Maybe I bumped a weak hose, but doubt it.

my996 is infamous around these parts
It seems to be your coolant tank. Take a look at renntech and rennlist. I replaced my own and there is a good write up at renntech if you choose to go that route. The labor estimate a few years ago was something like $600 so I did it instead. The key is make sure you get the fluid filled using the vacuum method and not the top it off by yourself. I ended up with air pockets using the latter method and my car ran hot until I corrected it. G/L

Good advice - Vacuum it down and save yourself the headache.

Be glad its dripping onto the exhaust and not out of it! Good luck with the replacement.

Mine just started leaking this weekend--just dropped it off at the shop. I'm no good at the DYI stuff. I just replaced the RMS a couple months ago! Oh well.

I was photographing a wedding on Saturday, I said to my friend, I smell antifreeze, but no leak. On Sunday, went for a drive, a couple of hours later big puddle. WTF! Oh well, it was bound to happen sooner or later, 98,000 KM on the tank.

Dude, that sucks. Hopefully it won't cost to much to replace.

I heard it is a ***** to change on the 02 and up because the tank is much bigger then the 99-01's. I thought it was my tank as well after reading posts on here and renntech but i put some pressure in the system and saw it coming right out of the water pump pully, ordered a new water pump from suncoast great price $230 with the gasket going to put it in this week with the DIY on renntech wish me luck haha.
