I am looking at muffler bypass pipes for my 99 996. Fabspeed has some listed for $550 and Ebay has some very similar looking for $160. One does anyone know if they are so different in construction to make one better than theother. Two, will putting these on be too loud for everyday driving. I like to hear the car but not attract the police or have neighbors wearing protection. Three, will these reduce the low end throttle not having the mufflers present for pressure? Any help would be appreciated.

Some people actually like them......but they were way too loud for me, and I like loud.

I tried several exhaust and finally settled on the Afterhours Sport Exhaust.

My Fabspeed pipes were nothing more than a stainless steel elbow pipe. Ebay ones couldn't be much different.

Straight pipes on the N/A cars are not for the faint of heart... Some guys do run them, but you'll have trouble getting their attention since they are deaf now.

 

I actually just put the Ebay version of the pipes on my 02 996 Cab. Few points to make. My car is a weekend car so I actually love it loud. On start and at idle, a louder throaty, bubbly sound (I like it!). On the freeway cruising, it is actually possible to keep it somewhat quiet (believe it or not... was approved by my wife). But throttle down, it screams especially in a parking garage and under overpasses (I love it!). My dad, 65 years old, drove it and said "I would not want a Porsche unless it sounded like this." With all that said, I like it on the Friday, Saturdays, etc. but it might be a little loud for everyday driving. And yes I do feel a little less low end torque, but I was also wondering if I am just trying not to give it as much gas in 1st and 2nd to avoid annoying cars nearby. I really do not see any difference from the Ebay pipes and the Fabspeed pipes in terms of size of the tip (so much cheaper). See my album to see tips from angled rear view of car. On my install, had to go to a local muffler shop as to center the exhaust tip in the bumper opening, they had to cut the length and user a spreader to fit over existing pipe from the cats. If you like loud and want to save money, consider them. My personal thought is that the aftermarket exhausts out there from $1000.00 on up, seemed to mainly change the "tone" and less so the "volume" which was possible with $160 plus $200 to install these. Lastly, if feel they may be too loud, you may want to google "afterhours exhaust" such as already mentioned or consider a local shop doing a PSE hack on your existing stock mufflers (pictures of this on prior forums) to get something close to that Porsche Sport Exhaust sound. My local muffler shop said they would do the PSE hack for about $100.00 then re-install for $200. Hope that helps.

I just bought a C4S and am looking into an exhaust that won't drone yet sounds good!

 

I have the Fabspeed bypass pipes. I love the sound,everyone that hears it loves the sound. Yes you do lose low end torque,but the sound makes up for it. I recently cut the oval tips off and welded 997s tips on there to bring it up to date with my LED tail lights. All in all at first it will not be for everyday driving but after awhile you wont even notice it. When i first put them on they were monster not it's still a monster that i dont pay attention to,but you will turn heads with just sound alone.

 

HxC, that's an awesome mod. I too love the sound... but did not like the way the oval tip failed to fill the bumper opening. Did you use OEM 997 tips (cost?) or get the new quad tips from Fabspeed? How much they charge you to cut and weld? Got pictures of your car from the rear?

 

guys, I have the fabspeed bypass pipes and love them... they can be a tab bit too loud sometimes though. Keep in mind your saving about 40 lbs off the back of the car as well - I'm sure that balances out a little less torque?!

 

These are OEM 997S tips i got them off ebay for $70. The muffler place charged me $100 to cut the pipes and weld the new tips on

I have the Fabspeed pipes on my 997 and they sound great. They are positively louder than stock, but they have a real rich, masculine tone. Very high performance sounding. I have two Harleys with drag pipes, so I am a bit partial to the loud sound, though.
