Help: I Need Cab Plastic Window Pics
If anyone has had a new plastic window for a 99-01 996 Cab stitched into their convertible top, would you please post close up pics of the stitching? You can PM me the pics instead if you like. Close ups like the ones in the attached pic would help. Thanks.
Long story short, I replaced my top and window with brand new factory parts. The dealer had problems, and I had to bring it back several times. Finally they just sent it out to have it sewn in without my approval - and I was not happy. After much arguing, they agreed to replace my top and window with a new factory part that had the window already sewn in. These pics are from the first top, I do not have any pics of the factory sewn in window right now though.
Thanks. Wow, mine looks like crap even compared to your old one! When ever you get a chance, would you please take the same kind of pics of your new top? I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks
I will try and go out this weekend and take a few pics. Having the right place do the install is very important, critical if you are resealing a new window in place. I went with this factory top to avoid the seal in window, only drawback is that if the window goes, it can't be replaced like the seal in window.
The windows can be replaced, they are heat sealed in with a frame that attaches to the rear wheels. Dealer tried three times to get this to work on a brand new factory top and two separate windows with no luck. I would ask the dealer to commit to a guarantee if trying to seal a new window in. This job takes experience. Sewing in a new or the original window is the least expensive option. The window was around 300 retail a year and a half ago, but you still want to find someone that does good work. Try Sunset Imports in Oregon, they typically have the best prices, even with shipping. There are also good aftermarket tops that come with a window, price varies greatly, but if memory serves, two years ago it was just over 2k including installation at a good shop. At any rate, I can't stress enough to go to a reputable shop, a few extra dollars can make a huge difference.

There are some very good products that people have completely rejuvenated their windows with, although I have no personal experience. Try a search, I would try this first, not much to lose. If only the window is the issue, least expensive option is to try and repair the existing plastic, then have it sewn in. Not sure about tinted windows, but there may be some aftermarket ones.
Thanks for that picture. Your results look great. Would take another couple of pics? One that shows a straight stitch down the entire length of the window and one that shows the entire window? Thanks again.
No problem. This is a factory Porsche top that comes with the window already sewn in, it was not the most cost effective option, but that's a long story... Any pics of the whole window will not show any stitching, the pics actually exaggerate the stitching, but you can barely see it in person. The stitching is exactly the same all the way around and perfectly spaced, if I back up you really can't even see the stitching. I will try and take another pic, but the car is stored down the street right now, so it may be a few days.
