Transmission whining/grinding noises

While driving my baby today after a spirited round of driving I noticed that while in third it was whining a bit. I shifted to second and it started making a popping/ grinding sound. I came to a light and it didn't want to go into gear at all and once in 1st it shuddered hard. So...

What are these noises?
How hard is it to change the tranny fluid?
Am I about to have something very expensive happen?

Thank you for the help.

Chris

Hmm, don't know about the grinding bit - but that can't be good. I have a tranny whine...had it looked at/ listened to by my indy and he claims its the ring and pinion and basically said to come get it fixed when I either got tired of listening to it or when I have a couple bucks laying around and in no need of the car for a couple of days. Based on that I haven't done anything about it for at least a year.
