Supercharger Wear on Clutch
Supercharger Wear on Clutch
I have a 99 996 Cab. and I put a supercharger on it about 5,000 miles ago. At this time I also had a new clutch plate and lighter flywheel installed. My horsepower is now 371 at the wheel. Anyways, I started to get some slippage of the clutch in 2nd and 3rd gear. I take it into dealer and my clutch plate is gonzo and I had to get a new one. They could not find anything wrong with the setup to cause this. I drive my car daily if the weather is correct and I do not drive it that hard. I never try to light up my tires at the start, as I have 335/35/18's and I know how hard it would be on my clutch(I know I am a wuss). I do get on it after I start and run thru 1st, 2nd, & 3rd hard sometimes. I only drive on streets and I have never taken it to the track. Do you guys know of any reason why this would happen, other than I just have too much HP for the cluth? Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.
No problem with my clutch and I'm pushing more HP than you. You might not be getting used to the new power. Make sure you get your foot off the clutch quickly after take off. The SC in no way will effect the life of the clutch, but improper application of the power will. I generally start off at about 1000 -1100 RPM on street driving. You may have to go a little higher with your lighter flywheel, but there is no reason why the clutch should not be fully engaged in less than a second on flat street driving I also use my clutch for braking more than I do my brakes.

I did not get the stage 2 clutch. My mechanic thinks that the lighter flywheel may cause it to spin to fast, thus the fast wear. I have the new plate on and we will see how it goes. I appreciate the two of you responding and giving me your thoughts.

I have no experience with the lighter flywheel as I have the stock clutch assembly.

I agree... We installed a Supercharger on a car recently with the light weight flywheel and the car revs sooo much more freely

When I need to replace my clutch I plan on looking into th lighter flywheel. Right now the stock is more than adequate. The heavy flywheel gives me a little more comfort in heavy city traffic. I have no problem with revs with the kind of boost and setup I have.
I drive my buddy's 996 that has the lighter flywheel setup and I didn't care for it much. It did rev quickly at just a "blip" of the pedal, but once you were fully engaged,it didn't seem to provide any further benefit than the stock plate. I guess I will have to drive one a little more to really get a feel for it. It's difficult to compare one car with another.

I'd bet money 90%+ of 996 drivers couldn't tell the difference between my stage 2 w/lightweight flywheel and their own cars, there is no difference in traffic or otherwise.
