Smile Carrera Audio System Upgrade Advice Needed!

Hey all,
I want to upgrade the head unit on my 01 C2 cab. Do any of you know if there is a unit that is basically and "plug and play" so that I can continue to use my under bonnet CD changer and stock amp?

I'm not really concerned about having nav. I've upgraded all of the speakers.

I've contacted Rod for the west coast who owns a high end car audio shop and his solutions (which I'm sure would make my car sound amazing) are out of the question. I don't want to put 10k of audio into a car worth 25k.

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure how high end you want, but sounds like you are mainly concerned with plug and play ability? On my Wife's Cabrio, I found the several Blaupunkts fit perfect and the wiring harness is even the same. I was amazed. Got ready to start splicing and I pinned it out and it was the same...Plugged right in. The one I used was the Blaupunkt Brisbane SD. It has no CD player any longer, just SD drive that holds about 500 songs and a USB port, Ipod Jack, and FM stereo. Worked for what I was trying to get to...Ability to play MP3's and not keep burning CD's. I Put one in my other 996 as well (not messing with my 997 turbo as it sounds great)...The finish blends nicely with the interior and you can adjust the main display to match that crazy yellow/orange. You can check out the photos at this link on renntech. May not be at all what you want...Just thought I would let yo know...Good luck!

Thanks for the advice on the Blaupunkt system. Is it a double din unit? My car has nav.

No...Sorry. Did not know you had double DIN/Nav....This was a single height. But other blaupunkts may still line up perfectly. I just did not need the double height. Good luck anyway.

Did not see many Blaupunkt Double DIN's but came across this one. I am uncertain if it matches up like the single height versions, but worth a look perhaps?

I put the Kenwood unit in that's been in several threads - includes touch screen nav. I had an amp put in the bottom of the boot and the installers made a false floor - still fits a roller suitcase in there. But it wasn't plug n play by any stretch.

That double-bin Blaupunkt is named the New Jersey! I wonder if it's made for the old-school New Jersey driving test: You must be able to change stations on your radio, smoke a cigarette, shift, fondle your girlfriend and drink a beer at the same time.

When I took off the Becker in my MB and switched it with a Blaupunkt, I also got that delightful surprise. Then I read somewhere that the OEM Beckers are made by Blaupunkt.

Unclear to me as to why another Blaupunckt would be an upgrade. If you have upgraded your speakers already, it seems to me the best "bang for the buck," would be an amp which would make the most of your upgraded speakers.

Yes, it is universally agreed that upgraded speakers would benefit from an external amp. However, as far as the argument about Blaupunkts (or any other aftermarket headunits) being an upgrade, yes, I would also look at it that way. Aftermarket headunits offer mp3/wma capability, bluetooth, ipod capabilities. Add nav on certain double-din units. There are some that sticks with OEM headunits due to the OEM-look and illumination-matching. That is where the Blau (and some particular single- and double-din units) come in, as these also have adjustable RGB illumination that would make it match the dash lighting. And a plus for the Blaupunkts is that they plug right in and those models with matt black faceplates look very OEM.

Yup, I see your point and well taken. I was looking at the sound quality only, and would rec looking for a used amp (cost) to improve that. I suppose the OP could do part of the upgrade now and part later.
