2002 996 C2 Clutch question

Hi, my friend has a 2002 996 c2 and we are having a little issue with the clutch . The issue is that it takes a great deal of force to push in the clutch. Now is there any way to modify it so it can be softer when pushing and releasing the clutch petal? I have called a few good porsche repair shops in my area with the same question and they told me that they have to change the entire clutch. One hop quoted me $1,600 installed. And another mechanic quoted me $1,500 installed. Is that a good price? Also are there any aftermarket clutch kits available that are softer? I appreciate all the help. Thanks guys!

I read a few weeks back on rennlist that there is a "clutch helper spring" in the clutch pedal assembly which assists in pushing the clutch in (making it softer). When removed, the clutch becomes harder but give you a better engagement feel.

It’s worth checking to see if it hasn't been removed and that it’s not broken.

I looked it up, but I don't see a unique ULR for each thread, so I'm not sure how to post a link to it here. I don't think you need to be a member of rennlist to read the thread though. Look for a thread titled "Improved Clutch Action Dramatically" which had its most recent post on 02-20-2010 on the 996 forum. The original post was on 04/08/2007.

Hope this helps.

Oh. I don't understand though. If you goto the actual page you can't copy/paste the address? Then i can click on it and than just mark an account with rennlist

Typically the clutches get stiff just before the go out, not sure why. It is a hydraulic clutch so there is not much you and do to "soften" the effort, but they are not usually very stiff unless they are close to worn out.

You can change to a different slave cylinder to make your hydraulic system work in a more efficient way for you. If you clutch is new, then this would be the best way of taking care of this. Fluid dynamics will allow you to control the amount of pressure you need to make the clutch work.

Hope that this helps,

Ditto on the helper spring being broken. My friends clutch on his 04 was hard to push in and then last week got harder. The helper spring ended up being broken in three piecies.....

definitely try helper spring if clutch is new, an old trick to tell if a clutch is going out is to see if it can take off in 3rd gear smoothly without slipping

Oh boy I think my clutch is going because it is pretty hard to push in. Will have to try a 3rd gear take off and check out the helper spring.
