alternative to snow chains

What do you mean? To bring them to the shop for mounting?
In that case I don't fit them in the car, the tire place is about 5 minutes away and I drop the tires off in my Audi wagon and then take the carrera in a few minutes later and then take the old tires back in the Audi.
If I didn't have the audi, I'd just buy a second set of rims(which I may do anyway at some point) and put them on/off myself once they were mounted.
